Tom’s Top 10 Management Principals.

1. Be very clear in your assignments. 2. Distribute some of the “interesting” work to your subordinates. 3. Do not take on poorly done work by a subordinate employee. Either

replace them or teach them. You have your own job to do. 4. Don’t take credit – Divert it. Your credit will come by accomplishing agency

goals. 5. Don’t rationalize things that you think are acceptable behavior for you,

“The Director,” that are not acceptable for the staff. 6. Do not spend time on issues that do not support agency goals. 7. Network with your Management Team. 8. Confront poor employees. 9. Recognize and praise good work. 10. Don’t focus on Mistakes, but on what can be learned from making

mistakes.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Every person is different. You may have to manage people differently but you should manage your agency in a consistent fashion.. .

Don't ignore problems -- identify and resolve. Question past practices. Identify and implement efficiencies. Thoroughly research all sides of issues. Make decisions -- don't waver.
