Introduction

• Fairtrade plays a unique role engaging people on tough issues in trade and development.

• The global Fairtrade system has grown to represent over 1.65 million small-scale farmers and workers, thousands of companies and traders, and 30 member organizations.

• Producers now co-own the Fairtrade system, shaping global strategy and running operations across three continents.

• Fairtrade is well positioned to make important contributions to the Global Goals for Sustainable Development

The world today

The challenges the world faces are intricately interconnected: – cannot address poverty until we address inequality

– rampant development exacerbates climate change

– any approach to eradicating child labour and forced labour must address sustainable livelihoods throughout value chains

– a lack of equal rights for women inhibits progress across the board

Fairtrade seeks a world where:– the benefits of trade are distributed more equitably

– human rights are respected at every stage of the value chain, from the largest multinational to the smallest producer organization

– business does better

– fairness and justice come first

– governments and policymakers actively foster the environment required for trade to drive living income and living wage

Goal 1: Building benefits for smallholders and workers

Our new strategy now seeks to enable producer organizations to secure the revenues they need for workers to be paid a living wage and for farmers and artisanal miners to earn a living income.

CAPTURING GREATER VALUE FROM SALES• We aim to increase the proportion of production sold on

Fairtrade terms.• New business models will help producers and businesses

create greater value through committed long-term relationships.

Goal 1: Building benefits for smallholders and workers

COMMODITY FOCUS• We will focus our efforts on our three largest commodities –

coffee, cocoa and bananas, present in all three producer regions and staples in every Fairtrade market.

TRANSFORMING COMMODITY SECTORS• Focusing on investment and innovation in key commodity

categories allows us to set benchmarks for excellence that can extend to other products and drive change.

Goal 2: deepening impact through services and programmes

• Fairtrade producer networks will work across key theme areas by working with global advisors, and international and local partners.

• We will improve our work to help producers achieve measurable social, economic and environmental impact.

ORGANIZATIONAL AND BUSINESS STRENGHTHENING • Support producers to access specialist services to build business

skills, and attract investment finance

WORKERS‘ RIGHTS• Actively support freedom of association, collective bargaining and

improved wages and conditions.• Continue to lead in living wage work

GENDER EQUALITY• Systematically mainstream gender discussion throughout

Fairtrade operations

CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE• Empower producer organizations as leaders in tackling the

exploitation of children in their communities• Make farming a more attractive career option for young people

CLIMATE RESILIENCE• Increase support for adaptation efforts • Help farmers advocate at governmental level

Goal 3: Building fairtrade markets

We will complement the Fairtrade mark with ways of working that range from product labelling to enabling business engagement in programmes, always centered on the Fairtrade principles of empowerment, capacity, transparency and fair pricing.

ENABLING BUSINESS TO DO BETTERWe will:

• work with business to enable them to achieve their own sustainability and sourcing objectives while driving change to meet producers’ needs

• enable learning and adaptive strategies based on impact data to improve the lives of farmers and workers

• offer optional monitoring and evaluation services to corporate partners to support their sustainability impact measurement

Goal 3: Building fairtrade markets

GLOBAL CONSUMER POWERWe will:

• establish a truly global support base for Fairtrade, putting products on ever more shelves across the world.

• prioritize growth in Brazil and India

COMMITED CITIZEN ACTION• We will leverage the unique strength in our grassroots

consumer support to drive change.

Goal 4: influencing government policies

The new focus of global development is on tackling global inequality and promoting sustainability in every country. This represents a powerful opportunity to improve the lives of the 1.3 billion small-scale farmers and agricultural workers.

GREATER INFLUENCE FOR SMALL-SCALE FARMERS AND WORKERSWe will:

• work to amplify the voices of farmers and workers in key policy debates

• advocate, together with producers, for government policies that create an enabling environment for fairer trade

Goal 4: influencing government policies

LIVING INCOME AND LIVING WAGEWe will:

• use our direct experience to influence policies and practices • pressure institutions and governments to enforce regulations,

set boundaries for the market and incentivize a more equal playing field

COALITIONS AND PARTNERSHIPSWe will:

• strengthen links with the wider Fair Trade movement• support Fairtrade producers to join wider national and regional platforms relevant to them

• continue to play an active role with other social and environmental initiatives through ISEAL

Goal 5: Building a strong global system

WORKING AS ONEWe will:

• maximise our impact by working together as one system, finding the optimal global-local balance to create a whole that far outweighs the sum of its parts

• build a stronger culture of partnership, transparency and shared accountability

PRODUCER LEADERSHIP• Our new strategy will accelerate investment in the producer

networks to strengthen governance, transparency, and accountability to their members, as well as building operational and external capacity.

• We will focus on developing leadership at all levels.

Goal 5: Building a strong global system

LEARNING AT THE HEART OF IMPACTWe will:

• incorporate learning tools and impact data into all planning and decision-making processes

• provide open access to impact information• involve farmers and workers in learning processes and

facilitate peer learning

EFFECTIVE USE OF RESOURCES• We will implement a Value for Money approach, assessing

our interventions against a clear cost-benefit framework.
