Introduction When not busy serving Rosen & Associates as an

associate, attorney Nancy L. Kourland gives back to her New York City community. Focused on assisting those experiencing homelessness, Nancy L. Kourland volunteers at the Flatbush Reformed Church Soup Kitchen and the Kensington Homeless Shelter.

In New York City, more people are facing homelessness than at any time since the Great Depression. Nearly 60,000 people were homeless in November of 2015, and over the course of the entirety of 2015 over 109,000 people made use of the municipal shelter system, a number that has risen by close to 90 percent in just 10 years.

Homelessness in New York City Further, there are thousands of additional

individuals living on the streets without shelter.

Studies have shown that single adults who are homeless experience higher rates of mental illness and other serious health conditions. For families, homelessness most often stems from lack of affordable housing, though issues like job loss and hazardous housing conditions also stand out as factors.
