The St Vincent de Paul Society Canberra/Goulburn and Communities@Work are holding their third annual Canberra Community Sleepout on 16

October 2015 to raise awareness of homelessness and its causes, as well as to raise funds to support our homelessness services.

A key focus of our event this year is educating the community on family violence and its link to homelessness. This includes those who are forced onto

the street, as well as those who do not have a safe place to call home. Census statistics indicate that a disproportionate number of women with

children are forced to flee unsafe homes onto friends’ couches, into their cars, to refuges and the street. As a community, we are calling on participants

to take a stand against family violence and to wake up to a better society.

Last year, over 700 Canberrans, including school students, families and corporate groups, attended the Canberra Community Sleepout. Participants

raised over $100,000 for homelessness services and told us they left with a deeper understanding of homelessness, its causes and how they can help.

This year we are aiming for 1,000 participants, which will make a huge impact on increasing awareness and vital funds to help us combat

homelessness. Our goal is to give people the support they need to take charge of their own destiny.

We hope that you will consider our request favourably.

Kindest regards,

Paul Trezise Lynne Harwood
