Information about presentation

The Government have stated several rules that you have to abide to in regards to food labelling. Throughout this presentation we will look at what has to be included on food labelling.

Name of food

By law a food label firstly must show the consumer the brand and what the product is. The name of the food should provide the correct information to the consumer about the true nature of the food to enable the product to be distinguished from other products. This is clearly displayed by the picture below by showing the make and what the product is.

Best before or use by date

• On the labelling of a product it has to have a sell by date and a use by date. This needs to be clearly identified so consumers know what they are getting. This also helps shops maintain their stock because they know the sell by date of their stock and can rotate stock accordingly.

Allergy Warnings

• On the labelling of a product it has to state what exactly is in the product, the reason for this is so consumers know exactly what is in the products if they have an allergy. There are some ingredients that you have to state on a product the include caffeine over 150 mg/L, Liquorice, what type of milk the product is, nuts and if it contains sugar to name just a few.

Quantity Information

• On a product you must state the quantity in grams, kilograms, milometers or litres. The two things you have to do it for include: packaged food over 5g or 5 ml and packaged herbs and spices. If a food was a solid and it has been changed into a liquid it has to show the drained net weight. You can see on the picture what has to be included.

The name and address of the producer

• The product has to state this information because if a consumer is unhappy with a product they can contact the producer and inform them of the problem. This enables consumers to contact directly the producer rather than the shops. It can also help the producers sort out problems with direct consumers.

Storage Conditions

• On a product it should state what the ideal storage condition is for it to be in its best condition. This will also help because if you keep a product where it is suppose to be stored it should stay in good condition up to its use by date, whereas if it is not kept in an appropriate place the product could be inadequate before its use by date.

Country of origin• If your product is either fish, meat, shellfish, honey, olive oil, fruit or

vegetables and has been shipped from outside of the EU then it must have the country of origin somewhere on the product.
