World Food Day (WFD) was established by FAO's Member Countries at the Organization's 20th General Conference in November 1979. The date chosen -16 October - is the anniversary of FAO's founding in

1945. The Hungarian Delegation, led by the former Hungarian Minister of Agriculture and Food Dr. Pal Romány, played an active role at the 20th Session of the FAO Conference and suggested the idea of celebrating the WFD worldwide. It has since been observed every year in more than 150 countries, raising awareness of the issues behind poverty and hunger.

Page 5: Importance Of World food day

THEMESSince 1981, World Food Day has adopted a different theme each year in order to highlight areas needed for action and provide a common focus.

Most of the themes revolve around agriculture, because only investment in agriculture – together with support for education and health – will turn this situation around.

The bulk of that investment will have to come from the private sector, with public investment playing a crucial role, especially in view of its facilitating and stimulating effect on private investment.

In celebrating Sustainable Food Systems, World Food Day is recognizing the need for systemic change to end hunger and malnutrition.

Systemic change is urgent because even though for decades the

world has produced one and half times enough food for every man, woman and child on the planet, nearly 840 million people go hungry while almost 870 million are undernourished.

Unsustainable models of development and uncontrolled population growth are degrading the natural environment, threatening ecosystems and biodiversity that will be needed for our future food supply.

2014:Family Farmers: Feeding the world, caring for the earth

Family farming is linked to national and global food security. Both in developing and developed countries, family farming is the predominant form of agriculture in the food production sector.

It includes all family-based agricultural activities, and it is linked to several areas of rural development.

FAO defines family farming as a “form of organizing crop and forest production as well as fishery, livestock raising, and aquaculture, which is managed and directed by a family, which mainly depends on family labor of both women and men.
