German Wines History• Germany has a history of winemaking that dates back to 100 B.C.

• Ancient Romans, who conquered the region, began producing wines on local soil. It was the Romans, who already recognized the potential of sites and cultivated grapes there.

• During the Middle Ages, monks upheld the tradition of making wine and cultivated the vineyards that are famous today.

• For several centuries of the Medieval era, the vineyards of Germany expanded, and is believed to have reached their greatest extent sometime around 1500, when perhaps as much as four times the present vineyard surface was planted.

German Wine History• Germany’s wine production lost its luster in the 1960s and 70s, when

large quantities of sweet blended wines were created for export

• Due to the low quality wine people turned to locally produced beer as their preferred beverage which a loss to the wine industry

• An important event took place in 1775 when the courier delivering the harvest permission was delayed for two weeks, with the result that most of the grapes in Johannisberg's Riesling-only vineyard had been affected by noble rot before the harvest began. Unexpectedly, these "rotten grapes" gave a very good sweet wine. From this time, late harvest wines from grapes affected by noble rot have been produced intentionally.

• The differentiation of wines based on harvested ripeness, starting in 1787, laid the ground for the Prädikat system

Ahr-The Red Wine Paradise

• The red wine-region Ahr is one of the smallest of Germany's wine-growing regions, with vineyards extending along the steep hillsides that line the Ahr River as it flows into the Rhine south of Bonn.

• Most of the vineyards grow red grapes - Spätburgunder (Pinot noir) and Portugieser - producing red wines of light charm and racy fruitiness. Lively, fresh Riesling and Müller-Thurgau are the white wines grown here. Nearly all of the region's wine is consumed locally.

• Wine: velvety to fiery Spätburgunder (Spatburgunder); light, pleasant Portugieser; fresh white wines.

Franken Wine Region-Powerful and Earthy• Before the reunification in Germany, Franken was the easternmost

of Germany's wine-growing regions, with most of its vineyards planted on hilly slopes of the Main River and its tributaries.

• Würzburg is the principal city of Franken and home of the famed vineyard, Stein, which gave rise to the generic term "Steinwein", formerly used to denote all Franken wines. Traditionally, most Franken wines are bottled in a squat, green flagon called a"Bocksbeutel".

• Franken wine is the most masculine of Germany's wines, often drier and earthier than wines from other regions. Müller-Thurgau and Silvaner are the main varieties planted, as well as new crossings.

• Wines: vigorous, earthy, robust, dry, often full-bodied.

Hessische Bergstraße – Small but Fine

• The wine-growing region Hessische Bergstraße (456 ha) is located north of Heidelberg, bordered by the Rhine on the west and the Odenwald (forest) on the east.

• The wines tend to be fragrant and rich, with more body and a little less acidity and finesse than those of the Rheingau.

• There are 233 different soil types in this region.

• The wines from the Bergstrasse are scarce and almost without exception consumed locally - a good reason to attend one of the local wine festivals in the medieval town of Heppenheim (late june) or Bensheim (early September).

• Wines: fragrant, refreshing fruity acidity, hearty

Page 22: German wines and Sparkling wines from around the globe

• It is the smallest of Germany's 13 wine regions.

• The region produces around 80 per cent white wines and 20 per cent reds.

• The region produces mostly dry wines.

• The region experience around 1,700 hours of sunshine annually.

Middle Rhine Region• Beginning just below Bonn and extending about 60 miles

south on both banks of the Rhine, the Mittelrhein (Middle Rhine Valley) is a beautiful region of steep, terraced vineyards crowned with medieval castles and ruins.

• Wines: fresh, fragrant, pithy, marked fruity acidity (sometimes austere).

• Bacharach  is the most important wine village of this region. The clayish slate soil yields lively wines with a pronounced acidity. Most of the production is consumed locally or sold to visitors

.

Mosel-Saar-Ruwer

• The Mosel River snakes its way past dramatically steep, slaty slopes covered with some of Germany's most famous vineyards.

• The wines of the Mosel and its tributaries, the Saar and the Ruwer, are richly fragrant, pale in color, light bodied with a lively, fruity acidity.

• The slaty soil imparts a distinctive taste to Mosel wines, ranging from fine-fruity to earthy, or "flinty". Often they have a hint to effervescence.

• Wines: richly fragrant, racy, piquant, elegantly fruity, delicate.

Pfalz – Biggest Wine Producer of Germany

• Bordered by Rheinhessen on the north and France on the south and west, the Pfalz's vineyards sweep across this pretty, peaceful land for nearly 50 uninterrupted miles and produce more wine than any other region in Germany. The northern half of this region is home to some of the best vineyard sites.

• The villages of Wachenheim, Forst, Deidesheim andRuppertsberg are well-known for Riesling wines which combine substance and finesse.

Page 31: German wines and Sparkling wines from around the globe

• Pleasant, mild wines rich in bouquet and full of body from Müller-Thurgau, Kerner, Silvaner andMorio-Muskat grapes are also grown in the clay and marl soils of this district. Chalk, clay and loess soils yield mild, fresh, often intense wines in the southern half of the Pfalz.

• In addition to its white wine, the Pfalzis also known for smooth, fruity red wine made primarily from the Portugieser grape.

• Wines: aromatic, mild, round and fullbodied, expressive.

BADEN• Baden is divided into nine districts , which is more than any other German wine

region. From north to south, these districts are:

• Tauberfranken, in the northeastern outskirts of the region and neighbouring Franconia. The wines are similar to the wines of Franconia, and are sold in the round Bocksbeutel bottle characteristic of Franconia.

• Badische Bergstrasse, the vineyards of which is a continuation of those of the small region Hessische Bergstrasse. This district is situated around the city of Heidelberg.

• Kraichgau, just to the south of Badische Bergstrasse, and north-east of the city of Karlsruhe.

• Ortenau, from Baden-Baden to just south of Offenburg is one of the more well-known districts.]

• Breisgau, from just south of Offenburg and to Freiburg. According to meteorological statistics, it has the highest average temperature and the number of sunshine hours of the region.

Page 45: German wines and Sparkling wines from around the globe

Kaiserstuhl, a cluster of hills of volcanic origin northwest of Freiburg with characteristic terraced vineyards. Its wines are powerful and it is probably the best-known district of Baden.

Tuniberg is situated on flatter land just south of Kaiserstuhl and west of Freiburg, and produces wines of a lighter style.

Markgräflerland stretches from Freiburg to the Swiss border at Basel, and is known for its easy-drinking Gutedel (Chasselas) wines.

Bodensee is situated in the southeastern outskirts of the region, on the northwestern shores of Lake Constance, which is known as Bodensee in German.

Page 46: German wines and Sparkling wines from around the globe

FRANCONIA• District Mainviereck:The Mainviereck ("Main

square") is the westernmost district of Franconia, on the lower parts of and is one of the warmest spots in Bavaria. The special soil is mainly red sand stone which is especially suitable for growing red wine.

• District Maindreieck:The Maindreieck ("Main triangle") is the middle portion of Franconia

• District Steigerwald: The soil of the Steigerwald consists mainly of gypsum. The wines of this region often have a very mineralic touch. The most important villages are Iphofen, Rödelsee and Castell
