Lesser known fact about DOMINO’S

❖ Domino’s was sued by Amstar, owner of Domino Sugar, in 1975 for trademark infringement. It was because their names were pretty similar. In 1980, the decision came in favour of the pizza chain.

❖ The original plan of the owners was to add one new dot with the opening of one new store to the logo, but they abandoned the idea later on. Perhaps it was the inability to incorporate so many dots, within the logo, with the increasing number of stores.

Contt. ❖ James Monaghan, the co-founder of the pizza store was working as

a mailman and did not want to quit his job and therefore he traded his share of 50% of the business to his brother Tom for an old Volkswagen Beetle. The Volkswagen was being used by the brothers to make deliveries.

❖ During an expansion plan, Tom Monaghan, removed sub sandwiches from the original menu. But the combo of one pizza in two sizes, 11 topping options, and Coca-Cola remained unchanged till late 1980s. In the year 1989, the first new menu addition happened with addition of deep-dish pizzas to the menu at a cost of $25 million.

❖ To compete with the fast food chain Subway, Domino’s offered free sandwiches to anyone named Jared which was the name of the former spokesperson of Subway. The campaign was rolled out in the year 2008 when four special varieties of oven-baked sandwiches were offered free.
