Padmabhushan Seth Mangturamji Jaipuria (1901-1978), who founded the College in his father’s
name, Seth Anandram Jaipuria, wished the institution to grow into a centre of unbound academic
excellence by fostering a spirit of multiculturalism reflective of India’s diversity in unity. Accordingly,
the VISION and MISSION of the College have been formulated as follows:

Principal's Message
2020 is an exceptional year in all sense of the term. The pandemic year has affected educationlike never before. Never before has the world witnessed such a threat to students' life andcareer. Higher education has received a hard blow and the schedule for a new session is still onthe anvil .The fate of students is almost the same worldwide .Yet , challenges are meant to be encountered, not avoided. We look forward to a meaningfulfuture by battling against all odds. The calamity is global and the need to fight it out requirescollective strength. The pandemic has taught us to go borderless and beyond discrimination.It is clear by now that life henceforth will revolve around the new normal. Masks , gloves,sanitizers and social distancing will be the new norm. We are yet not sure when in - personclasses can be held. To sustain good health and secure young lives should be our primeconcern at the moment . There might be a delayed start to the classes and semester durationsmight suffer but all such deviations have to be taken in the right spirit and not make us panictoo hard. We need to have faith and trust in each other and patiently wait for the stable times toarrive.The process of learning is as immortal as the virus itself. It is synonymous with the human raceand humans are here to stay. Vaccines are almost at our doorstep to eliminate the virus but noforce in the world is strong enough to restrict the flow of Higher Learning . So a cheer up to allthe new entrants to this college. A warm welcome to the new batch of 2020 !You are the third batch in the CBCS mode launched by the university in 2018. The systemlays equal stress on Attendance, Internal Examination, Tutorials , and End Semester Test . TheUG course entails six semesters in three years with each semester spanning six months. Thesystem is demanding and calls for your active participation and serious engagement.Education in the new normal can vary from online or offline to a blend of both. Right now weare spectators to an evolving situation and nothing can be declared with finality. However , thecomfort and convenience of our students is always our priority. You have been braveheartsfor the last five months and I am sure you will continue to be so . Our battle against the unseenenemy will soon be won.Wishing good health to all !

About the College
(1945 – 2020)
Platinum Jubilee
Seth Anandram Jaipuria College in North Kolkata is famed for its immensity. With around 5000 students and
more than 200 teachers and non-teaching staff, it is one of the few colleges in West Bengal running in three
shifts and catering to all three streams of Science, Arts and Commerce. Housed in one of the spacious
buildings of erstwhile Shovabazar Rajbari, it claims 18 Laboratories, a free WIFI zone, a Gymnasium, an
Audio-visual Room, Smart Classrooms , Library and Reading Room and a Board Room. The greenery is not in
plenty but a curated lawn and small stretches of garden are well in place.
With Rs. 1,75,83,333.00 received as RUSA (Rashtriya Uchchattar Shiksha Abhiyan) grant, process is on to
install two lifts of 10 and 16 passenger-capacity, promote vertical expansion of the building and harness
alternative energy resource through solar panels on roof top. Established in 1945 and inaugurated by Pandit
Jawaharlal Nehru on 22nd December, the institution has traversed a long way towards reaching a glorious 75 !
Padma Bhushan Seth Mangturam Jaipuria , established the college in memory of his father Seth Anandram
Jaipuria , as a service to higher education in pre-independent India. The college owes deep gratitude to the
Jaipuria family for their contribution to education especially to female education in Bengal. As a mark of respect
the college has instituted ‘The Seth Anandram Jaipuria Memorial Lecture' to be delivered every Foundation
Day.
The college has secured a B+ rank in its first NAAC screening. Other awards and laurels have also come its
way from time to time. Mother Teresa International Award Committee (under the aegis of All India Minority and
Weaker Sections Council) has conferred the ‘Mother Teresa International Award’ for being The Best College of
the year 2018. As per ranking by Edu World (an ISO certified Education Service Provider based in Bangalore)
of 100 best colleges in India, (published in Education World, a Human Development Magazine, May 2020)
Jaipuria College has achieved a pride of place as the 55th top college in India and the 11th best in Kolkata.
Flexibility and freedom are the two major goals ensured by the college. Students are offered a wide range of
subjects and a variety of combinations to choose from. The number of Courses run are also aimed at satisfying
all student categories. There are seven Departments in B.Sc. (Honours), nine Departments in B.A. (Honours)
and three in B.Com. (Honours). Commerce is the most expansive department spanning all three shifts and
allowing maximum number of student- intake. B.A. General and B.Com. General courses are also available in
the Morning and Evening shifts respectively.
All undergraduate courses are framed in the semester mode under the CBCS or Choice Based Credit System
introduced in 2018. Promoted by UGC, it is essentially a student

centric programme for uniformity in higher education all over the country and for competency of students to
compete at par with other states at the national level. The programme is skill-enhancing and job-oriented with a
spectrum of disciplines to choose from. Marks are allotted for Attendance, Tutorials and Internal Assessment;
the stipulations in each case are stringent and mandatory. Extra curricular activities like Sports Day, Foundation
Day , College Social , Seminars, Picnics and Excursions are held every year with much excitement and interest.
Placement and career enhancement of students are also supported by a designated cell.
Jaipuria College is not just a seat of learning but a family of kindred minds with all stakeholders playing
significant roles. It carries a lineage of intellectual quest , creative pursuit, extra academic activities and cultural
excellence. Generations of youngsters have paved its history leading to the Platinum Jubilee year . Celebration
of the jubilee got off to an impressive start with the Foundation Day Lecture on 22nd December 2019. Further
academic programmes , supposed to follow throughout the year , were sadly held down by the pandemic . They
were replaced by webinars and web talks to conform to the evolving situation . Teaching - learning was also
continued as much as practicable .
The present period of turmoil has unsettled the entire educational scenario.Yet, the institution believes that
human spirit is undaunting , and its stride towards the centenary will continue unabated.

Registration and Migration
Registration
Students joining the College are required to get their names registered with the University of Calcuttaimmediately after admission is over. They must, for the purpose, fill in the prescribed forms and sign(available at the college office) and submit the necessary documents [scanned copy] in support ofapplication for the purpose of Registration from University of Calcutta. It may be noted that withoutRegistration, student will not be allowed to appear in the University Examination.
Already Registered i.e., having CU Registration No. may submit application along with registrationcertificate to the college office.
Migration Certificate:
Students coming from other States-Board/Council /University; other than West Bengal Council ofHigher Secondary Education [WBCHSE], and CBSE, ISC, NOI, WBMBSE, WBRMV mustsubmit the migration Certificate [in Original] to the college office within one month from the date ofadmission, and treated as provisionally admitted student till the admission has to be confirmed by theCalcutta University.
Such students must at once apply, as early as possible, to the own Boards/Council/University, whichthey have left, for migration certificate / permission to join Calcutta University for study. Aftersubmission of Migration Certificate they are required, to apply to the Registrar of the University ofCalcutta in the prescribed form, for the approval of their admission, along with the prescribedMigration Fee.
It should be noted that Transfer Certificates can not be issued to provisionally admitted- studenton migration from other Boards/Council/University before their admission is formally approved bythe Calcutta University. He/she may discontinue the course with prior submission of letter to collegeoffice.

All Fees/Charges are subject to change
Note: Laboratory Caution Money is payable by every student for Laboratory-based subjects at thebeginning of the session. It is refunded at the end of the course,after breakages have been paid for.Students depositing such caution money must apply for refund within a year from the date they ceaseto be students of the College, failing which the said amount is liable to be forfeited and the same willbe transferred to the Development Fund of the College. No application for refund is entertainedunless the relevant deposit receipt is submitted. Where the breakage exceeds the amount of theCaution Money,the excess amount shall be paid by the student. The same rules as regards LibraryCaution Money apply in the matter of refund.
The College Authority directs the students to pay the tuition fees semester wise.Tuition fees for eachsemester should be cleared by the 15th day of the first month of the said semester.The said semesterare July to December; January to June.
Defaulters shall have to pay a late-payment fine of Rs. 1.00 for each month of default. Names of thedefaulters will be removed from the register on the 1st day of the next month of default. Their nameswill be restored on payment of the arrear feedband fines plus a Restoration Fee of Rs. 1.00.Studentswhose names are removed from the rolls for non-payment of dues are not entitled to any credit forattendance for the period between the removal and the restoration. Defaulters can never get back lostattendance.Note: College Fees & Deposits will be accepted by the Punjab National Bank on all working days.
PROVISION FOR FINANCIAL AID TO STUDENTS
Students’ Aid Fund : Students can apply to the Principal with recommendation from the GeneralSecretary and Finance Secretary of the Students’ Council for a lump sum grant of not more than Rs1000 for payment of fees or other educational expenses. Only the poor and needy students mayapply for this.Tuition Fees : Students from weak financial background,may apply to the Principal through theH.O.D. , in the prescribed format along with necessary documents , for concession in Tuition Fees.Good attendance and examination result shall be considered in granting this concession in differentslabs of 50% , 75% or 100%.College Welfare cum Meritorious Fund : This fund for students is meant only for special or urgentpurposes like Medical Need, Travel Allowance, or Participation in approved Programmes. In eithercase, such prayers have to be granted by the concerned Department of the College.

Newly introduced CBCS
The Syndicate of the University of Calcutta has approved the Admission and Examination Regulationfor Semester wise Three Year B.A./B.Sc./B.Com (Honours and General) Courses of Studies underChoice Based Credit System (CBCS) under the University. This is effective from the academicsession 2018-2019 onwards. (Notification No.:CSR/4/18)
The 3 year B.A./B.Sc. (Honours/General) Programme shall be for a minimum duration of Six (6)consecutive Semesters of six (6) months each i.e. three(3) years. The odd semester will startordinarily in the month of July & the even semester in the month of January of every year.
A candidate pursuing a regular course of study for three year semester wise degree course shall haveto clear all the semesters in all respects within a span of five years from the year of admission to theparticular course & combination,failing which enrollment of the candidate shall stand cancelled.
AttendanceA student attending at least 75% of the total no. of classes held shall be allowed to appear at theconcerned Semester Examinations subject to fulfilment of other conditions laid down in the regulation.
A student with at least 60% attendance but less than 75% of the total no. of classes held shall beallowed to appear at the concerned Semester Examinations subject to the payment of condonationfees & fulfilment of other conditions laid down in the regulations.
A student attending less than 60% of the total no. of classes shall not be allowed to appear at theconcerned Semester Examination and he/she has to pursue admission to the Second Semester inthe very next year for attending the classes and appearing at the said Semester Examination.

● Webinars have been Organized by various departments and IQAC of the college during thislockdown period. Till now eight webinars have been organized by the department of Economics,Commerce (Morning and Evening), Philosophy (Morning), Psychology, Chemistry, Zoology andEnglish (Day).● College is celebrating its platinum jubilee by organizing seminars by different departmentsunder the broad theme of "Breaking boundaries: Sustainable Development, Diversity and theEcosystem". Its first seminar was organized by pure science departments on 28.02.2020. Prof. Dr.Parthasarathi Majumdar of IACS and Mr. Sekhar Banerjee, Solar Electronics specialist delivered theirlectures on that day.
● Seminars are arranged regularly by all departments. Reputed educationists and guestspeakers are invited to deliver lectures and interact with the student participants. These programmessupplement classroom teaching and encourage the students to become more academicallyinteractive and updated.● Teachers /students are motivated to participate in seminars, workshops,held in othercolleges/universities/academic institutions.● The Tidings- An Annual National Workshop on Print and Visual media is organized everyyear by the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication.● A telescope on the roof of this college offers unique opportunity to every aspiring sky-watcherto observe planetary movements under expert guidance. Honours (Day) channelised their creative imagination to form a group of such thoughtful people called
The Literary Trump. This journey began on September 23,2016 and awaits fresh minds to join in the
creative endeavour with each passing year.
● In compliance with the Nutrition Week observed by WHO every year in the first week of
September,the Food & Nutrition Department in the morning shift of the college,celebrates a Nutrition
Day within the stipulated week. The day is marked by display of posters and models, setting up of
food stalls with cheap,nutritious items and common health check-ups. At the end of the day, students
winning the recipe contest and poster drawing competition are duly awarded.
● Study Circle (Morning Shift): The Morning Shift of SAJC under the initiative of
Shift-in-Charge Dr. Mou Chattopadhyay and Conveners Dr. Tarun Kanti Ghosh, Dr. Baijayanti
Chatterjee and Dr. Arnab Saha also organises a Study Circle consisting of a series of talks/lectures
delivered by the Professors of different departments of the Morning Shift. So far 10 such lectures
have been held where the teachers taking out time from their busy teaching schedules have
presented original papers. The papers were based on a diverse range of topics like the religious and
practical aspects of Swami Vivekananda’s Chicago lectures presented by our Principal Dr. Asok
Mukhopadhayay (Department of Commerce), on ‘Theology, Philosophy and the Disruptive non-being
of God’ by Prof. Rajiv Roy of English Department, on Demonetization and Capacity Building by Dr.

● Spoken Tutorial (Day Shift): Online Computer Courses organized by IIT Bombay:The
“Online Spoken Tutorial Courses” organized by IIT Bombay is successfully running in our prestigious
college. The students who have registered for the first semester have completed the online course
successfully. The course included video lectures, assignments, online tests and final certification after
the test. Students from three major disciplines viz Physics, Computer Science and Commerce have
participated in these courses namely C, C++, PHP, MySQL, JAVA, PERL Python etc. Total number of
students enrolled for this session was 74 when the semester begun on January 18th, 2016. As a result
of team efforts, the first semester of these Spoken Tutorial Courses is completed successfully in our
college. All the efforts taken by the leading faculty Dr. Sudeshna Sawoo as an organizer/course
co-ordinator and Mr. Rajesh Misra, Ms. Oindrilla and Mr. Pritam as teachers as well as invigilators for
the online tests which was arranged in the IT department of our college and continue to keep up the
good work for the coming semesters.
● Research Activity of Department of Chemistry (Day shift)Recent developments in high quality research works on basic and interdisciplinary science has added
a drop of glory to the Department of Chemistry in Seth Anandram Jaipuria College. One ongoing
major project of Dr. N. Pal on metal-organic framework and synthesis of porous material aimed for
invention of new types of metal-chelates for gas adsorption, purification and catalysis. Many new
equipments and techniques have been introduced to meet the purpose. Many new crystallographic
data has been generated and solved from the newly found crystals of these metal-organic complexes.
Another ongoing major project of Dr. S. Sawoo on the synthetic use of near infrared dyes for
non-invasive detection of cancer cells is also running in this department. These modified dye
molecules would be promising transporter in selective delivery of drugs to the specific cancerous
cells. Two sincere research scholars are currently working in these projects. Dr. M. Islam is also
pursuing his Minor Research Project on reaction kinetics in this department. The details of the

EXTRA CURRICULAR
● The Students Council is a democratically elected body of students which has long been calledthe Students Union. It is now known as the Students Council, by the Govt. Order. It is astatutory body meant to serve the different needs of the students for the positive interest andregular progress of the College. It actively participates in and organizes various events likeAnnual Sports,Teachers Day, College Socials, Inter-College Competitions, Fresher's WelcomeProgramme, Blood Donation Camp. They are meant to voice the conscious, integratedopinions of the students to the concerned authority in a congenital manner.
● The College Magazine encourages original thought and expression among the students.Three Magazines are published separately by the Morning, Day and Evening shifts. Besidesthese, separate Wall Magazines are also brought out by each of the three shifts.
● The Sports and Games Department of the college has attained a high degree of eminenceby virtue of the tireless effort of its student community and the extremely active departmentalpersonnel. As an outcome of this endeavour students of this college have had consistentsuccess in various Inter-College, Inter-University, State, National and International levelmeets. In the year 2006, a Sports Board was formed for the betterment of and co-ordinationamong the students interested in sports and associated co-curricular activities.

INFRASTRUCTURE
Library and Reading RoomThe college has a well-equipped library with a spacious reading room under the charge of experienced
Librarians. The books are classified according to the Dewey Decimal System and catalogued by the Card IndexMethod.
A good number of Indian and foreign journals, periodicals and magazines, both of general andspecialized interests, are subscribed to by the Library for the use of teachers and students. A magazine cornertoo has been installed in the Library for the benefit of all. For home use, students may borrow one book(volume) at a time against the borrower's card and retain it for a fortnight. Honours students are permitted toburrow two books at a time. Students failing to return books within the permissible period are fined Rs. 2 foreach day's delay and no book is further issued to them without the Principal's permission. Books andmagazines may also be borrowed against the Reference Card for use in the Reading Room in leisure period,but such books must on no account be taken out of the Reading Room. Borrowers are responsible for thebooks or magazines issued to them and they are strictly forbidden to lend them to others. Defacing books byscrubbing or any other way is liable to punishment. Books lost or damaged by the borrower will have to bereplaced at his/her cost.
The different departments with a rich collection of books cater to their own students throughrespective Departmental Libraries.
Computer facilityThe college computer center offers various courses in Computer Education. For anyone interested incombining professional skill in computers along with normal academic pursuit under one roof, this is agood option.
College CanteenOur college Canteen is a hub of animated activity for the young Jaipurians. It's facilities are
open to students of all three shifts of the College. It remains open from morning to late evening.Known for mouth-watering dishes at a reasonable price, the Canteen also caters to the basicrequirement of teachers and non teaching staff in separate rooms. Efforts have been made recently torefurbish the Canteen by giving it a splash of colour and introducing sleek new furniture.
Book StallThe college Book stall offers books and stationery at a reasonably lower price compared to themarket rate. Every Jaipurian can avail of this facility. The Book Stall is a student-friendly outlet runexclusively for the interest of the students.
Students' Common RoomThere are two spacious Common Rooms in the college- one for girls and the other for boys. Both arehoused in the first floor of the building and both offer provisions for indoor games like Table Tennis,Varrom, Chess and the like.
ElevatorConstruction of an elevator with a carrying capacity of 10 to 12 people using the RUSA fund has beenstarted.

Awards/Stipends/Concessions
● The Late Professor Deepak K.Bose Memorial Award is awarded annually to two deservingstudents in the department of political Science. The award, founded by the family of the lateteacher carries a monetary incentive to be expended on books. The award is given to the topscorers from the Department in the final year University Examination. The award ceremony ismarked by a Memorial Lecture in honour of the Late Professor.
● Seth Anandram Jaipuria Memorial Awards for Academic Excellence are presented to thehighest scorer of each department in the final year University Exam. The presentationceremony is held on the Foundation Day of the College on 22nd December every year
● Professor Jaba Chatterjee Memorial Awards are presented to the three toppers of theDepartment of English (Day) every year. The award ceremony is marked by a MemorialLecture sponsored by our college in revered memory of the late Professor.
● Professor Bani Bhushan Dasgupta Memorial Award is presented to the highest scorer inEnglish (Honours) every year.
● Professor Banibhushan- Amiyabhishan Memorial Awards are presented to the two mostdeserving students from First and Second year English (Honours) every year.
● The Students' Fund Scheme renders financial assistance to deserving students to meet theirtution or Examination fees or to purchase books relevant to under graduate studies. The Fundis composed of contribution from University Grants Commission (if available), and also fromthe students.
● Free Studentship and Half Free Studentship are granted every year on a merit-cum-meansbasis. The College notifies the date for submission of application and the list of necessarydocuments. The continuation of all stipends, aids and the like is subject to good conduct,regular attendance and satisfactory academic performance. Students enjoying any kind ofGovernment Scholarship are not eligible to partake of this grant.
● Railway Concession Forms can be obtained from the college office by outstation studentsand applications made in accordance with Railway guidelines.

CODE OF CONDUCT
1. Any failure to comply with the attendance-rule may ultimately lead to loss of oneacademic year.
2. Although the College does not insist on a formal dress code, it is expected that thestudents will wear decent clothes within the college premises, keeping in mind thesanctity and reputation of an academic institution. We leave the choice to thestudents, but the liberty should not be misused.
3. Use of mobile phones in the classrooms/library/laboratory/corridor is strictlyprohibited. An breach of conduct may invite severe punishment like permanentconfiscation of the mobile phone.
4. The Principal may in the interest of the institution require a student to leave thecollege without assigning any reason. In such a case transfer certificate will beissued free of charge.
5. Reports are sent to parents or guardians about the conduct and quality of work of thestudents. The Principal invites co-operation of the students and their guardians inmaking the process of education fruitful and in maintaining general order ofdiscipline. All the Departments in the College regularly organizeParent-Teacher-Meeting. The Parents are apprised of the Academic Performance,Attendance and General Conduct of their Daughters/Sons.
6. Students of all three shifts should always carry student’s ID cards, AcknowledgementCards and Produce such Cards at the entrance of the College
PASSED OUT STUDENTS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO ENTER THE COLLEGE PREMISESWITHOUT PERMISSION OF THE COLLEGE AUTHORITY
7. Students are strictly prohibited from making noise on the college corridors and as awhole in the entire campus. No one can misuse the green space/the garden/thecorridor for playing any kind of game. Any act which disturbs the discipline of thecollege is treated as punishable offence.

The Internal Complaint Committee (ICC) of the College has been constituted as per UGC
(Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal of Sexual Harassment of Women Employees and Students in
Higher Educational Institutions) Regulations, 2015
This committee is meant to deal with the issues of gender based violence and to conduct gender

Placement and Career Counselling Cell
The College has in place a vigorous Placement and Career Counselling Cell. Instituted in 2008, ithas been instrumental in introducing students in various positions of renowned companies, throughcampus interviews. Career Counselling sessions are held at regular intervals to promote careeroptions in diverse fields. Grooming Sessions and motivating lectures are also a part of theprogramme.
