The responsible owner’s guide to looking after your pet

Fence me inGive me land, lots of land under the starry skies above, but DO fence me in. Be a responsible pet owner and make sure little Rover is confined to your property.

Tip: Make sure your fence is high enough, strong enough and not able to be dug under so you avoid the worry and sadness of an escapee.

Because you’re mine, walk me on a lineWhen you’re out and about with your pet in tow, make sure you have them on a secure lead.

Tip: If you want to let your furry friend run free, check out dog off-leash areas across the region by clicking here.

Barking up the wrong treeThe world outside is quiet, a leaf rustles, a plane flies overhead and suddenly your dog is singing an opera to the sky above.

Tip: Ongoing barking is often part of a larger problem and it’s important to have an understanding of what makes your dog bark. Talk to your vet or pet shop for advice.

I’m not a morning dogIf your dog wakes up on the wrong side of the bed every day and doesn’t like to be approached, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Tip: If your pet isn’t petting friendly, use a red leash or dog scarf to warn others. To find out more about aggressive dogs, click here.

Soft kitty, warm kitty, little ball of fur, cute kitty, pregnant kitty urghh urghh urghhIf you’re not ready to be a grandparent to your fur baby, it’s important to desex your pet.Tip: Desexing doesn’t just stop unwanted babies, it can also help with temperament as desexed pets are less likely to wander. It’s also cheaper to register a desexed pet!

Pack it up, back it in, let me beginThe sun is shining, the grass is green, you’re out walking the dog and they back up to lay a parcel on the neighbour’s lawn. You look around to make sure no one is watching and just keep on walking. Tip: Not picking up after your dog won’t make you popular around the neighbourhood. The tip here is to always pick up after your dog and take bags with you every time you walk with your pet. Every. Time.

Hello, is it me you’re looking for? When your furry friend is missing, you want every opportunity for them to be found safely and to be reunited with you.Tip: Our animal management staff carry scanners so microchipped animals can be scanned and identified quickly and easily.
