Outline Introduction Types of solid waste What is the solid waste management? Need of solid waste management Process of solid waste management 4-R of SWM
Introduction Solid waste is unwanted & useless material
generated from combined residential, industrial and commercial activities.
Solid waste is the waste material that is found in solid form.
Ex.- tires, scrap metals , furniture, discarded appliances etc.

What is the solid waste management?
Refers to garbage or trash management A system for handling all of the world’s trash be it
municipal waste collection, recycling programs, dumps & incinerator.
Need of solid waste management Foremost mounting problems to most countries Hazardous to human health Causes depletion for lands(landfills) Can cause land pollution
Process of solid waste management
Collection Mechanical collection system
1. These systems consists of containers & truck mounted lifting mechanism.
2. In full automatic system an articulated arm mechanism is used which lifts & replaces containers.
Municipal collection systems1. Rural collection system
2. Urban collection system
3. Regional collection system
Transportation1. Loading location
2. Container\truck capacity
3. Capability & reliability
4. Safety & comfort
5. Tools- hand carts, tricycles, community bin carrier
Treatment of solid waste
Physical treatment methods1. Primary treatment
2. Secondary treatment
3. Polishing
Chemical treatment methods1. Acid\base neutralization
2. Chemical extraction & leaching
3. Ion exchange
4. Chemical precipitation
5. Oxidation
6. reduction
Disposal of solid waste Open dumping Land filling Sanitary land filling Pyrolysis Incineration Composting Disposal into sea
Land fillingIn this method, solid waste are carried and
dumped into the low lying areas. the refuse is filled up in layers of 1.5 m.
1. Advantages-simple and economical• Skilled labour is not required.• No costly plant & equipment required.
2. Disadvantages-large area required• Use of insecticides is required
