Our site visit was held on 26th June 2015 which

is located at Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur. This project is

basically a condominium named The Andes. This site

visit is organised to help us in our assignment for 3

subjects which are Measurement 1, Construction

Technology and Building Materials. In this assignment

we are required to produce a report with different

requirement by each subjects. During the site visit we

are required to understand the basics of the

construction process and noted down what we

had saw and learnt for our report.

Overall view of the site.

From the figure above we can saw that the progress of construction for this

project was until basement floor only. This Condominium consists two block which

are Block A with 26 storey and Block B with 25 storey. The Project Manager Mr.Siow

told us that they expected the date of completion of Block A is 30th August 2015 and

Block B is 31st October 2015.

Introduction

To understand the basic of the construction process.

To let us experience the actual working environment in a construction site.

To let us more understanding the function or usage of different type of

building material involved in the construction site.

To allow us to learn knowledge about construction that we can’t learn in book.

To give us a clear vision on those what we had been taught in class before.

Explore and identify various types of building materials and technology on

site.

Awareness of the importance of safety on site and understanding of safety

problems and site conditions

Recognize the items measurable for sub-structure and reinforced concrete

frame works.

Objectives

When we reached the construction site, there was an information board placed in front of the entrance. From the information board we can know some information of this project. The construction site is just located beside a condominium so the whole area of the construction site was fenced up to avoid any damage or dirt to the condominium and also other facilities nearby. In the construction site we can saw few accommodation for workers and also act as a meeting room at the site.

In the site, we can saw parts of the tower crane placed on the floor nearby the entrance of the site for future use. The uses of tower crane is mainly for lifting heavy things and transporting them to other places. We can also saw a lot of material placed on the floor along the site for example timber, reinforcement bars, parts of scaffolding and others. We saw a few familiar machine for construction in the site which were excavator, bulldozer and mobile crane.

The type of foundation for this condominium is piling. It supports the structure and transfer load from the building to the ground. There were also pit that had been excavated and the sides of the pit was supported by steel sheet piling so that the soil beside the pit won’t fall back to the pit it also provide high resistance to driving stresses. In one of the pit we can saw pile cap that have been finished and starter bar come out from the pile cap. Other than that, we can saw a lot of formwork and reinforcement bars of columns and slabs in the basement floor which is still under construction.

measurement that found on the site. There were also some links and stirrups on the floor.

Figure 9: The workers were building the formwork for column. Its act as a mold for the concrete that poured inside.

Figure 10: This is the rebar inside the basement slab. The supervisor told us that they using reinforcement bar for the basement slab but start from 1st floor they will using BRC for the slab.

Figure 11: From this picture can saw that there is

a small pvc pipe insert right through the rebar for column in between the vertical bar. It is used to strengthen the concrete.

from the pile cap.

Construction Technology 1

Type of foundation used in the site: Piled Foundation (Bored Pile)

Piled foundation is a group of piles that supports a superstructure. It is a deep

foundation.

Piled foundation is usually for multi storey buildings because it can transmit

heavier load.

It is a foundations relying on driven piles often have groups of piles connected

by a pile cap.

Reason of using piled foundation:

This project is a condominium and it’s consist of Block A and Block B with 26

storey for Block A and 25 storey for Block B. So piled foundation is the best choice

for this building because it can transmit more load than other foundation.

Bored Pile

What is Bored Pile?

Bored pile is used for those tall buildings or massive industrial complexes,

which require foundations that can bear the load of thousands of tons, most probably

in unstable or difficult soil conditions. The method of drilling bored pile is different

from RC square pile or spun pile, which is using driving method. Bored pilling works

required specialist bored piling contractor to follow up instead of hiring general piling

contractor.

Bored Pile Pilecap on the pile

Advantages and Disadvantages of Piled Foundation

Advantages Disadvantages

Can be placed deep into soil Requires heavy equipment for handling &

driving

Can transmit heavy loads Noisy installation cause environment

impact/ vibration affect neighbour

properties

It prevent any shifting or collapse Not suitable in soils of poor drainage

qualities (driven pile)

Piles can be precast to the required

specifications

Advance planning is required for handling

and driving

Less material is required for

construction while extensive excavation

of ground material can be avoided

Can be affected by insects / salt water

(timber pile)

Building Materials

The grade of reinforced concrete:

The grade of reinforced concrete used for the construction of the building is

Grade 35 reinforced concrete.

Advantages of Grade 35 reinforced concrete:

o It have better resistance to fire

o Long service life with low maintenance cost

o Cheaper than Grade 45 reinforced concrete and it is more common used in

construction area

o Can be casted in any required

Disadvantages of Grade 35 reinforced concrete:

o Low compressive strength if compared to Grade 45 reinforced concrete

o Lower grade of reinforced concrete will easily cracked under service load

o Lower ductility than higher grade of reinforced concrete

Building elements with 35 reinforced concrete in the site

Pilecap, Slab, Wall and Beam

Grade 45 reinforced concrete

Advantages of Grade 45 reinforced concrete:

o Higher strength concrete resists loads that cannot resisted by normal-strength

concrete.

o Using higher grade concrete means that column size can be reduced.

o Higher compressive strength

o Extended life cycles

Disadvantages of Grade 45 reinforced concrete:

o More expensive than Grade 35 reinforced concrete

o It is weak in handling tension

o It do no retain heat very well. The surface of the concrete will be cold during

the winter

Learning outcomes/ Conclusion

This is the first time I when to a site visit at a construction site. I learnt a lot of things in this site visits. I learnt that it is important to have a good communication or teamwork with the construction team members on site for a successful and good quality of project.

In this site visit I also have a clear vision and able to understand on a lot of things that had been taught in class but never seen it before for example I saw how the reinforcement bar in column, slab, or wall look like. I also have a clear vision on how a pilecap or pile inside a pit look like. From this site visit I also understand how they actually construct the formwork for a column or wall. I learnt that actually before poured concrete in to a column they will insert a pipe in between the vertical bar to strengthen the concrete, this is what I never know before this site visit. I also learnt that safety is really important in a construction site.

Most important is that we have a chance to go to a construction site and experience the actual working environment in a construction site on a uncertainty circumstances especially under hot sun.

In conclusion, this is a very great chance to gain more knowledge about construction site. I am very happy to have a chance to go for this site visits because I learnt a lot of knowledge of construction.
