WHY DO WE NEED TO MANAGE OUR RESOURCES?

• The basic necessities that we require in our daily life all come from the resources on earth.

• These resources are limited and the tremendous rates at which the humans are consuming it will lead to the natural resources getting over.

• Therefore to save these resources for the next generations to come , we must manage them.

REDUCE: we must reduce the usage of

our resources.

RECYCLE : we must recycle things such

as plastic, glass, paper , etc instead of producing more.

REUSE: we must reuse things such

as paper, and plastic again and

again for different purposes instead of

disposing it .

Sustainable management We must manage the resources in such a way that the current generation as well as

the future generation benefits from it. This is called sustainable management of

resources .

We must not use our resources at such fast rates that we do not leave any resources for

the next generation.

Here are a few ways of sustainable management of resources -

Dams

A dam is a barrier that impounds water and serves

the purpose of retaining water.

They ensure the storage of adequate water for irrigation

as well as generating electricity.

But there are a few drawbacks of building dams.

They cause social problems like displacement of people ,

economic problem because of huge amounts of public money used in building the dam and environmental problems such

as deforestation.

Water harvesti ng• Watershed management emphasizes scientific

soil and water conservation to increase biomass production.

• It also mitigates droughts and floods and increases the life of downstream dam and reservoirs.

• A water harvesting structure called khadin are built in level terrains . These structures recharge the ground water level.

COAL AND PETROLEUM • Coal and petroleum are very important

sources of energy. It takes millions of years for them to form and thus they are most likely to get exhausted in the future.

• Here are a few ways with which we can do our little to manage them-

• walking or using public transport instead of our personal vehicle.

• Replacing old bulbs with energy saving fluorescent bulbs.

• Investing in solar energy. Buying devices that work on solar energy.

• Switching off all electronic devices when not in use.
