Background• The Nordics: Denmark, Iceland, Finland, Norway, Sweden • Organized university collaboration around SD since 2012
• Nordic Sustainable Campus Network, NSCN• campus greening and teaching
• 12 Nordic HEIs have signed the Rio+20 HESI Initiative• University legislation in Sweden: teach SD contents & EMS
How is SD implemented in the Nordic HEIs?

The ”Rio+20 project” 2014-2015Targets Understanding how the Nordic HEIs approach sustainability and
recognizing the central drivers and barriers in the implementation of SD with Rio+20 HESI targets as a framework
Methods1. A mapping survey to Nordic HEIs’ staff members2. 3 interactive workshops (Copenhagen, Gothenburg, Oslo)

Results

Participants
• Project survey: 152 respondents from 52 Nordic HEIs
• Workshops: 98 participants from around 20 Nordic and 6 international HEIs
• Total: 59 Nordic HEIs, 6 international HEIs and 10 other stakeholders

Focus areas and level of implementation
• What kind of issues the HEIs value the most?• Core issues = 1, important issues = 2, ”can wait” issues = 3• What is the stage the institutions are in the implementation?
• Not started at all 13%• Starting 25%• Planning 16%• Operational 43%• Reached their targets 5%

How does the implementation look like in campus operations and teaching?• Evaluating the given statements in a scale of 1 to 5 1 = Entirely disagree, 5 = Entirely agree Campus operations: KPIs Communications Services Procurement Awareness-raising

SD in the Nordic HEIs• In their way to reaching the goals of Rio+20 Initiative, but Ecological sustainability more addressed than social Emphasis on campus operations compared to teaching Indicators are not in balance Professional development in SD should be offered
4 main conclusions to promote SD and to overcome the barriers1. Legislation and incentive-based steering could encourage the
university management to implement SD 2. An EMS could lead to a more structured and clearer organization of
SD-related work3. Striving for more collaboration, increasing the amount of student
engagement and inter- and multidisciplinary projects could raise awareness and change behavior throughout the institution
4. Visibility of SD and the mainstreaming of ESD could be promoted through better communications and educating the staff
Institutional engagement
