Integrated Action Plan for the execution of a programme of infrastructure works and a series of initiatives aimed at developing tourism through the cultural and natural resources of the System of the Navigli canals and the waterways in Lombardy in the context of Expo 2015

The concrete steps to be taken in this geographic area to consolidate places which have already been developed as well as overhaul other pre-existing elements or develop completely new locations, can be summed up in three main categories of intervention:

a) the nature and culture component with a focus on the traditions and memory of elements in the landscape;

b) the utilisation and recreation component, which can appeal to local, Italian and foreign tourists;

c) the strategic component which operates on a larger geographic scale through networks and systems and serve as a condition for the virtuous administration of components a) and b)

• Action N1 - Tourist signage A unified system of tourist signage to mark the local, natural and cultural highlights along the Navigli

The specific aim, as far as Navigli Lombardi is concerned, is to create a signage system that guarantees ‘continuity of identity’ for the entire system

• Action N2 - Information system Development of a Navigli information system: Navigli APP (I-Os and Android) , web and social media network

for the unified promotion of the tourism and cultural highlights of the Navigli (in Italian and English).

• Action N3 - Floating Pontoons

Installation of floating pontoons to increase moorings on the Naviglio Martesana (n°2) and to bring the landing stage of Abbiategrasso on the Naviglio Grande up to standard.

• Action N4 - Landing stages

Redevelopment of n° 8 existing landing stages along the Naviglio Grande

(maintenance, construction of facilities and bike-ferry interchange)

• The Navigli System comprises a network of canals with a total length of over 150 km and there are almost always towpaths which, for reasons of maintenance and free circulation of pedestrian and cycle traffic, are used by countless individuals and vehicles on a day to day basis.

• These towpaths are outside of the normal road system and therefore are often lacking signposts or reference points to give directions about local features and geographic location.

• The intention of the project is to eliminate this problem by posting the entire canal system with tracks leading off from the Navigli into the major centres of historical, architectural, natural, cultural and recreational interest, creating signage (n°178) to give generic and immediate information on the place in question

PIA NAVIGLI web&mobile plan

Web plan • There will be an overhaul of the portal

www.naviglilombardi.it in order to boost web communication and improve the architecture and user-friendliness of the site also via Social Media (Facebook, Instagram, Youtube, …).

• It will be possible to consult all the historical, cultural and environmental information and the Navigli Lombardi area will become better known through the interactive maps with standardised or customisable tourist routes. Users will be able to profile themselves by indicating their tastes and preferences and so create their own personalised tour guides (times required for itineraries, means of transport, points of interest, accommodation along the route, etc.).

Mobile Plan • The Mobile Plan involves creating a

client/server application solution for iOs and Android platforms on Smartphone and Tablet devices. This solution will provide a mobile area system which allows the user to interact with the territory, increasing the information content with geo-referencing of the resources available in the area subdivided according to category: culture, tourism, economy, etc.

• The system is multilingual (originally Italian-English with subsequent inclusion of other foreign languages).

The operation involves construction and subsequent installation of movable landing stages made out of metal. This structure, which is extremely simple from a structural viewpoint but extremely effective in terms of utilisation, consists of a gangway connected to the shore which rests on a floating structure at the other end which serves as a mooring for boats. The major advantage of these constructions which will be located in three different municipalities is how quickly and easily they can be moved around the canal network since the gangway can be supported by floats and transported along the waterways. These structures also make it possible to use boats for the disabled along the Navigli tourist system since the slant of the gangway can be reduced to the legal limits.

The landing stages constructed in the recent or distant past which have been renovated are elements which bring together the landscape and social life of the communities located along the Naviglio Grande, for many centuries the route of preference for the transport of goods and people to and from Milan. Landing stages and pedestrian and cycle paths in good or excellent condition are a genuine opportunity to incentivate tourism in various localities and the surrounding areas. They also provide the conditions which allow tour operators to propose reasonably priced tour packages both for the EXPO and over the long term. Where necessary, improvements will be made for tourist navigation to make mooring easier for the boats. These landing stages will be identified in special information noticeboard and in the vicinity information totems will give information on points of tourist/cultural interest. There are also plans to add a new dimension to the navigation package by providing bicycles in order to integrate the boat trip with a bicycle ride around the area.

NAVIGLI ACQUA FESTIVAL

The first edition of “FAN” (2013), which was intended to be an experiment to demonstrate the potential of the Navigli System and the Darsena dock as its hub, featured a series of micro events (exhibitions, workshops, installations and artistic performances) in collaboration with a number of subjects operating in the arts and academia (NABA, Politecnico, Columbia University, Cracking Art Group and other professional artists). The second edition (2014) included also events linked with other Milanese fairs (e.g. “Salone del Mobile”) and the floating structures had a relation with courtyards and some of the most picturesque locations along the Navigli to host the various events.

In 2015 it is included in the main event “Expo in Città” The aim is to create an art park, restoring vitality and stimulus to an area which is a symbol of the city, improving the quality of life of the residents as well as the level of services on offer.
