The EarthMister® now makes traditional above ground watering a way of the past. No longer do we have to waste water. Water runoff will be a thing of the past. With EarthMister® you can water at any time of the day, no matter how hot or how hard the wind is blowing because the weather has been taken out of the equation.

What is the EarthMister®?It is a pressurized subsurface irrigation system that is installed 6-8 inches below the surface. It has a parallel jet spray that sprays right into the root zone and reduces water usage up to 80%. Since our atmosphere is more than 70% nitrogen, it puts this natural fertilizer right to the root zone creating thicker and denser roots.

Perfect for promoting the deepest roots in agriculture or landscape for trees, vines and shrubs for fast recovery from stress and long lasting self sustaining growth.

Benefits of the EarthMister®?

If the dripline is sufficiently close to the surface, water and soil particles could pop up to the surface, creating a wet area directly above each emitter. When this happens, the objective of keeping the soil surface dry is not achieved, and can cause erosion. The EarthMister® is installed 6-8” below the surface eliminating surfacing and eliminating system erosion.

Rodent problems seem to be more severe under dry conditions. Keeping the soil surrounding the system wet seems to alleviate the problem.

One of the main problems with SDI and other types of subsurface irrigation systems is emitter clogging. Because the EarthMister® operates efficiently using 70-90 psi blasts of water clears any dirt or particles that may clog the emitters.

EarthMister® Farm Study

Grapefruit / Avocado Orchard – Temecula, CAThis Grapefruit Farm in Temecula, CA has been in operation with a new owner for eight years and has been using the EarthMister® pressurized subsurface irrigation system for the past four years. The orchard is approximately 1.5 acres with 100 mature grapefruit trees that, about three years ago, were intercropped with 60 avocado trees (due to subsurface moisture level farmer did not need to add more EarthMister® units). There are also five lemon and orange trees. A total of 350 EarthMister® Vertical units were used on 87 trees - four per tree. The orchard topography is slightly hilly with two “valley” areas and sandy loam soil. Municipal water supply is used to irrigate the crops.

Prior to using the EarthMister® system, the trees were irrigated using a conventional sprinkler system with 1800 coverage, then half of the orchard was converted to a surface drip system about six years ago. Due to the initial drought conditions in 2009-2010 the municipal water district encouraged farmers to find ways to reduce water usage and created an incentive program that provided water savings rebates. The farmer removed the entire sprinkler and half of the drip system to install the EarthMister® subsurface technology shortly after the program began and achieved an 18 month ROI on the total project cost using the EarthMister® from the water savings rebate program alone.

In winter 2012 the area experienced a long “deep” freeze where most farmers in the area lost trees. Due to the use of the EarthMister® all of the grapefruit and newly planted avocado trees fully recovered. Also, the avocado trees began producing small fruit in spring/summer 2013. The farmer is planning on converting the remainder of his orchard to the new and improved EarthMister® III system later this year. He has also been speaking with his neighbors about his experience and comparing his 30% larger grapefruit with theirs. He has also experienced an over 20% increase in yield per tree.

The following chart, is a comparative analysis of the water usage cost and schedule of the orchard before and after using the EarthMister®. The farmer pays $3.028/ft3 for agricultural water. The farmer has experienced a 93% water usage and cost savings.

The following calculations were derived using a 100 Hp water pump as an example.

Water pumps over 100 Hp have a 92% efficiency rating (translates to an 8% efficiency loss).

According to the US EIA average cost for electricity in CA is $0.145/KWHr.

The example farmer waters twice a week for a total of 8 hours and waters for 40 weeks a year. Since this example

is strictly for energy calculation the amount of acreage and water usage are not factored in.
