Now we have to bring this in relation with the SOOT emissions caused by the sea transport from China to Europe (appr. 12.000 nautical miles) e.g. of a cell phone, a pair of shoes or an electrical car. A standard container is capable of taking appr. 40.000 cell phones, 2500 pairs of shoes or 2 electrical cars. The Vessel, e.g. Emma Maersk can take 14.770 TEU and the duration of the voyage varies between 20 and 25 days at sea depending on speed. When concidering only at the volume of cargo, Emma Maersk could nearly transport 600m cell phones, when this is then compared with SOOT emissions of a car, the sea transport of one cellphone causes appr. 280m/600m=0.47x 23 (days at sea) = SOOT emissions of appr. 11 days of normal car usage. For the pair of shoes this is worse because of the lower capacity of the container by factor 16 = 176 days of car usage.

For the transport of the electric cars it is a factor of 20.000 compared to the cell phones leading to the fact, that the transport of one electrical car from China to Europe would cause the same amount of SOOT emissions as 220.000 days of normal (gasoline driven) car usage. This numbers are not taking into account the typical lower payload percentage and the misbalance of cargo on the way back to Asia, so this is a very conservative approach. Because transportation of cars in containers is not usual, we can also look at SOOT emissions of a typical car carrier vessel, which is interesting, because the cars themselves might offer very good environmental characteristics, but overall, including their sea transport, we get another picture, which you are not informed about when purchasing a car: As example we take “Andromeda Leader” a typical car carrier vessel. It typically loads 5500 cars and has a consumption of 45 tons of heavy fuel oil per day and a typical voyage between Japan and Florida takes 22 days. This results in appr. 1000 tons HFO for the complete voyage or 1000/5500= appr. 182 kg HFO per transported car. Factorized with the 3500 times higher SOOT content of HFO we get 637 tons of car fuel. These 637 tons of car fuel are containing the same amount of SOOT like up to 182 kg HFO! Even though the transport of cars in highly specialized car carriers is optimized to the limit, this still means the transport in this example causes as much SOOT emissions as appr. 160,000 days or 436 years of normal car usage (at 4kg fuel per day). Another perspective in concern of the actually high amount of wildfires in the U.S.: If all the forests in California would burn down within one year, meaning an estimated 850 million tons of wood (http://news.berkeley.edu/2015/04/15/california-carbon/ ) containing 0.1% of SOOT (http://www.biomassenergycentre.org.uk/portal/page?_pageid=77,103200&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTAL ) this would be equivalent to “only” 24 million tons of HFO due to the higher suphur content by factor 35. The large Container Vessel with it`s consumption of 320 tons per day roughly spends 250-300 days per year operating at sea, leading to an annual consumption of 80,000 tons of HFO. So 300 ULCSs -during one year! - would emit the same amount of SOOT like burning down California`s forests. And at least 254 of these vessels already exist (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultra_Large_Container_Ship ) and are sold to the public as… The conclusion: Transport cannot be green this way, even though it has been strongly optimized, production MUST take place a lot more where the products are needed. And without the shoe – boxes I agree, a container could hold 6000 instead of 2500 pairs of training shoes. If this is not enough all you need to do is take the Space Perspective on the following page, there it should be clear that Car manufacturing as such is Clean” in fact Super Clean” no matter how much one “Screws Up” in the day to day operation’s” (VW).. ?

LOTOS-EUROS model (TNO)

The LOTOS-EUROS model (Schaap et al., 2008; Hendriks et al., 2013) has been applied to estimate the contribution of international shipping to NO2 and PM10 concentrations across Europe. Within the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) project EnerGeo, a source apportionment module for LOTOS-EUROS was developed to track the origin of the components of PM and their precursors (Kranenburg et al., 2012). For anthropogenic emissions, the TNO-MACC emissions database

for 2005 has been applied (Pouliot et al., 2012), which retains the information on fuel types used. One of the available source categories is heavy fuel combustion in international shipping, thus enabling tracking of the contribution of this emission source throughout the model simulations. The result of the model study is presented in Figure 5.3.

On an annual basis, international shipping causes high NO2 concentrations in the busiest shipping routes (Figure 5.3, top right panel). Ship tracks are clearly visible in the relative contribution of shipping

Washington D.C. - Urban and industrial air pollution can stifle rain and snowfall, a new study shows, because the pollution particles prevent cloud water from condensing into raindrops and snowflakes. These findings are reported in the 10 March issue of Science.

The new study, by Daniel Rosenfeld, of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, presents satellite images and measurements of "pollution tracks" downstream from major urban areas and air pollution sources such as power plants, lead smelters, and oil refineries. The tracks consist of polluted clouds that have shut off virtually all precipitation because they contain abnormally small water droplets. The droplets' small size is caused by pollution particles that act as "seeding" sites around which cloud moisture condenses. Approximately one million small droplets must collide and coalesce in order to make a precipitation-sized drop-that is, one large enough to fall below the cloud base and reach the ground before evaporating. In polluted clouds, there are too many small droplets and not enough larger ones. These small droplets float in the air with low probability of bumping into each other and merging into raindrops. The smaller droplets are also slower to freeze into ice crystals, resulting in less sleet and snowfall. Because urban and industrial air pollution is a significant problem in many regions of the world, Rosenfeld's findings suggest that human activity may be affecting rainfall patterns on a global scale. These data are the first direct evidence of how urban and industrial pollution affects rainfall levels, a question scientists have debated for several decades. In fact, some previous studies have concluded that air pollution might increase rainfall, but the debate has continued due to a lack of convincing data.

"In the past, scientists had to collect information by poking little holes in clouds from airplanes, or using statistics about rainfall patterns because you can't replicate rain-clouds in the lab. Now, new satellite instruments allow us to have a comprehensive look at the problem. For the first time, we can measure cloud precipitation and microstructure simultaneously over large areas," Rosenfeld said. In his Science paper, Rosenfeld presents the first images of pollution tracks over land. The images, taken over regions in Turkey, Canada, and Australia, all contain known sources of industrial or urban air pollution. The tracks stream away from these pollution sources in long narrow plumes. Rosenfeld took yet a closer look at the pollution tracks in Australia, where the plumes were particularly striking. Further measurements from a bevy of satellite instruments showed that precipitation of both raindrops and ice crystals-which was occurring in the unpolluted clouds-was practically shut off in the clouds within the pollution tracks. However, the total amount of moisture in the polluted clouds was sufficient to produce rain and snow. Rosenfeld also notes that in other parts of the world air pollution is more widespread and not as easy to distinguish as it is against the relatively clean Australian atmosphere. Thus the well-defined tracks identified in the study "serve as a Rosetta stone for the potential impact of more widely distributed aerosol pollution on clouds," writes Owen Toon, of the University of Colorado at Boulder, in a related commentary article.
