Target Audience

The British Board of Film Classification

What is the BBFC?- They are responsibly for rating released

films that are theatrical, videos (although these days it would be DVDs) and video games.

- If a film is a 15 it means people under the age of 15 wouldn’t be allowed to watch it in cinema or buy it on DVD, Blu-ray etc. Films classified as a 15 usually contain themes such as adult themes, strong language, moderete violence/sex references, undetailed sex activity and hard drugs.

Age Certificate

Overall, we decided as a group that we would form the target audience to be roughly 16 years old but the whole age group would go up to age 25, this is because this is a particular group, for example, the other groups are 26-44 and then 45-64. So these categories make it easier to define which age groups of people we needed to choose for our targeted audience. The other aspect that we needed to consider was the age rating of the film, the different age ratings are universal (U) which is when anyone can watch the film, so these films are like cartoons and movies that are appropriate for any age group to watch. Second is the rating 12A which is when an under 12 can be accompanied by an adult and then they go up to 15 which is the horror genre which is slightly inappropriate for under this age and then if a film in next rated at an 18 is it when there is gore and there are more inappropriate scenes that would be too extreme for an under 18 year old, so these are rated highly, we thought 18 was too high and the audience would be restricted.

The age rating for our film is 15, we think this is suitable for our film because it is mainly aimed at teenagers and if the rating was an 18, it would restrict our audience. A 15 is like the in-between so there is a larger amount of people that can watch it, and it is not too low, for example if it was a 12 then people wouldn’t want to watch it because they wouldn’t think it wouldbe suitable for them. The main reason we decided to make it a 15 is because our film is a horror film, and after research we found that the majority of horror films, especially ones that we would compare our film to, are rated 15. This means that thetargeted audiences for their films would also be our target audience; this gave us a sense of accomplishment because we felt secure that the film would be successful with the age range which we decided it 16-25. I think that this is a good rating for our film because teenagers will be interested in this type of movie genre because it has an appeal on teenage life, such as the ideaof the film is teenage girls being jealous and insecure, and it has a huge impact on teenage girls in reality so they would be able to compare to the film and relate to the character in some ways.

Who would stand in a line to see your film?

• Gothic people (our piece has a gothic element to it)

• Females (it’s a film about women)

• Horror fans (maybe people into Slasher or Gothic horrors, similar to the teenagers in Scream 4)

• People who are into blood and gore.

Gender

We thought the most fitted and suitable gender for thetarget audience is girls because the protagonist is female so they can relate to her. The main gender for the target audience would be the female gender because of the links to insecurity which are linked to real life situations with teenage girls and this also makes the movie really relatable for teenage girls, despite the twist in the film, which is not shown in the opening two minutes of our media product.

We thought that males could also link into the audience with links to the “male gaze”, we thought that males would find an attraction to the female protagonist.

You don’t get many horror films with afemale protagonist

What do they wear?

We think that our targeted audience would wear gothic clothing and large, unfitted hooded jackets with band names, for example, on them. We think this would be a targeted audience because they are not mainstream and they appear to have some stereotypical insecurities.

Perhaps the female audience would wear quite a lot of makeup, similar to the protagonist of the film or maybe even more, this could be another link to social insecurities. We think this suits the description of our audience because they would be into horror films, and they could, in many ways link and compare to the protagonist such as the social problems.

Race

• All

• We don’t think our audience is specificallyracially categorised, however our protagonistcould insinuate that it is a form of racialcategorisation because she is of a blacknature.
