DESCRIPTION

Charleston ConferenceThursday, November 4, 20102:00 - 2:45 PMThis talk will address the issues that surround the migration from the analogue to the digital environment, using as a text Lewis Carroll's humorous nonsense rhyme - The Walrus and the Carpenter. These are complex and not easily resolved. It will review such important and familiar concepts as authenticity, veracity, provenance, granularity, context, and trust and how these are problematized in the digital environment. It will introduce the notion of the 'level of binding' that is required in different context to ensure authenticity and veracity and touch on underlying ethical concerns. The paper will draw on the publications of myself and my colleagues in the Humanities Advanced Technology and Information Institute at the University of Glasgow.

The sun was shining on the sea,Shining with all his might:He did his very best to makeThe billows smooth and bright--And this was odd, because it wasThe middle of the night.

The moon was shining sulkily,Because she thought the sunHad got no business to be thereAfter the day was done--"It's very rude of him," she said,"To come and spoil the fun!"

Page 7: To Talk of Many Things: Of Shoes--and Ships--and Sealing-Wax-- Of Cabbages--and Kings by Michael Moss, University of Glasgow

We know this is nonsense

• For the poem to work as nonsense it must reference the authentic.

• The sun does not shine in the middle of the night.

• But the sun does make the ‘billows smooth and bright’.

• The moon does sometimes shine ‘sulkily’.

The sea was wet as wet could be,The sands were dry as dry.You could not see a cloud, becauseNo cloud was in the sky:No birds were flying overhead--There were no birds to fly.

Authenticity

• Is a retrospective activity

• Depends on absences – missing tokens

• There is no date

• No signature

• No address

• But there may have been no ‘cloud’, no ‘bird’.

The Walrus and the CarpenterWere walking close at hand; They wept like anything to seeSuch quantities of sand:"If this were only cleared away,"They said, "it would be grand!"

"If seven maids with seven mopsSwept it for half a year.Do you suppose," the Walrus said,"That they could get it clear?""I doubt it," said the Carpenter,And shed a bitter tear.

Such quantities of sand

• The problem of the digital

• Granularity – stand alone objects

• Aggregation/Disaggregation

• Identity

• Reference

"O Oysters, come and walk with us!"The Walrus did beseech."A pleasant walk, a pleasant talk,Along the briny beach:We cannot do with more than four,To give a hand to each."

The eldest Oyster looked at him,But never a word he said:The eldest Oyster winked his eye,And shook his heavy head--Meaning to say he did not chooseTo leave the oyster-bed.

What do carpenters and walruses do with oysters?

• Recognising the inauthentic – tokens

• A pleasant walk, a pleasant talk!

• The eye of experience

• Kinaesthetic encounter

• Context dependent

• Think phishing scam

But four young Oysters hurried up,All eager for the treat:Their coats were brushed, their faces washed,Their shoes were clean and neat--And this was odd, because, you know,They hadn't any feet.

Four other Oysters followed them,And yet another four; And thick and fast they came at last,And more, and more, and more--All hopping through the frothy waves,And scrambling to the shore.

Their shoes were clean and neat--

• Why do users modify their analogue behaviour in the digital?

• ‘And more, and more, and more’

• Migration to the digital

• ‘All hopping through the frothy waves’

• Similarities and differences

• How do I know it is what it purports to be.

The Walrus and the CarpenterWalked on a mile or so,And then they rested on a rockConveniently low:And all the little Oysters stoodAnd waited in a row.

"The time has come," the Walrus said,"To talk of many things:Of shoes--and ships--and sealing-wax--Of cabbages--and kings--And why the sea is boiling hot--And whether pigs have wings."

To talk of many things

• Reflection and the reflexive

• Authenticity and identity must be confirmed by more than one token.

• Sealing wax – for all its technology Japan is still a sealing culture

• Kings – high level of binding

• Pigs do not fly and the sea is not boiling hot – except virtually.

"But wait a bit," the Oysters cried,"Before we have our chat; For some of us are out of breath,And all of us are fat!""No hurry!" said the Carpenter. They thanked him much for that.

"A loaf of bread," the Walrus said,"Is what we chiefly need:Pepper and vinegar besidesAre very good indeed--Now if you're ready, Oysters dear,We can begin to feed."

Pepper and Vinegar

• Can mean only one thing for an oyster

• Context – present in the analogue

• Missing in the digital

• Can it be provided?

• Only if it comes with a glass or two of dry white wine.

• Value added.

Page 21: To Talk of Many Things: Of Shoes--and Ships--and Sealing-Wax-- Of Cabbages--and Kings by Michael Moss, University of Glasgow

"But not on us!" the Oysters cried,Turning a little blue."After such kindness, that would beA dismal thing to do!""The night is fine," the Walrus said."Do you admire the view?

"It was so kind of you to come! And you are very nice!"The Carpenter said nothing but"Cut us another slice:I wish you were not quite so deaf--I've had to ask you twice!"

Page 22: To Talk of Many Things: Of Shoes--and Ships--and Sealing-Wax-- Of Cabbages--and Kings by Michael Moss, University of Glasgow

A dismal thing to do!

• Trust – an over-worked word

• Like authenticity it is retrospective

• You do not trust someone, just because they say they are trustworthy.

• Do the oysters have only themselves to blame?

• Does some moral responsibility lie with the Walrus and the Carpenter?

Page 23: To Talk of Many Things: Of Shoes--and Ships--and Sealing-Wax-- Of Cabbages--and Kings by Michael Moss, University of Glasgow

"It seems a shame," the Walrus said,"To play them such a trick,After we've brought them out so far,And made them trot so quick!"The Carpenter said nothing but"The butter's spread too thick!"

"I weep for you," the Walrus said:"I deeply sympathize."With sobs and tears he sorted outThose of the largest size,Holding his pocket-handkerchiefBefore his streaming eyes.

Page 24: To Talk of Many Things: Of Shoes--and Ships--and Sealing-Wax-- Of Cabbages--and Kings by Michael Moss, University of Glasgow

Before his streaming eyes

• The moral dilemma

• The level of binding

• Context dependent

• Particularly if you are in danger of being eaten!

Page 25: To Talk of Many Things: Of Shoes--and Ships--and Sealing-Wax-- Of Cabbages--and Kings by Michael Moss, University of Glasgow

"O Oysters," said the Carpenter,"You've had a pleasant run!Shall we be trotting home again?'But answer came there none--And this was scarcely odd, becauseThey'd eaten every one.

In the digital environment, everything may not go; but everything is turned topsy turvy – it makes your head hurt.
