Hypothesis

This hypothesis presents the concept that the handmade crafts tradition can inform and improve upon itself through contemporary communication design, as well as through a modern digital medium.

This is in contrast to the overwhelming presence of digital tools, such as social networking sites, that offer virtually no influence in the design process, and serve only to showcase products.

Such a hypothesis would encourage both the crafters and consumers to communicate openly with one another and collaborate on the processes of their designs through active information channels, leading to overall better products for both the consumers and crafters alike.

It has influenced and shaped modern contemporary design with its simple, uncluttered, and often soft-appearing looks.

Borrowed from other styles styles and other times strongly standing in abstract to established guidelines of current design.

They are often crafted by individuals or smaller groups of artists in assembly line-style production.

The designs moved towards a graphically-oriented style while remaining tied to it in a slowly changing style of design that stretches back over the last century.

Modern contemporary design is crafted in a way that produces each individual based on the imagination or experiences of the viewer/consumer.

Every sort of design is crafted, but the definition of what makes a craft isn’t as important as how it serves to define the design world that it is made in.

Contributes a style that is borrowed from multiple other sources while at the same time standing out as an individual piece of contemporary craft.

The craft is purposefully designed in contrast to the functionality of its traditional equivalents.

It offers hand-made objects free of commercial production and an individual sense of the artistic touch, rather than something that would more commonly be seen as bland or homogenous.

It is more often non-function or partially-functional, and is created to look complicated, difficult, or even aggressive.

This is in contrast to the safe and stable look of store-bought designs.

It is personality and artistic spirit in a world of commercialization and mass-produced sameness.
