The Hives

Hate to say I told you so.

First shot

• The First shot has a sort of motion blur effect. It gives the idea that it is very fast paced as the guitarist looks like he’s playing really fast.

Second shot

• The second shot has a zoom out of the base drum which also has the band name written on it. It syncs up to the beat of the song.

Third/Forth Shot

• These shots once again show the band playing to the song, switching to the bassist when his part kicks in.

Shot sequence

• After the song kicks in and all the instruments are playing, the camera varies with shots of different band members playing their instruments, some shots have more than one person. The camera sometimes has close ups of the instruments and the band members.

• Just as the vocals are about to kick in, the song breaks down, the lead singers face appears in the centre of the screen as he is the front man.

• The Next shot is when the vocals kick in, in this shot the whole band is shown, with the vocalist at the front.

General video shots.

• Through out the rest of the video, there are a lot of the previous shots repeated. There aren’t many special effects involved in this video apart from some mirror imaging, some pixelated black dots and motion blur.

• Some of the effects are overlayed over one another. For example the top left and middle left photo are overlayed in the bottom right photo.

Video style• In the video, the band are all

wearing matching suits and shoes. The black and white theme matches the set they are performing on with the white background and black floor. From my other research, you can see that the hives have a black/white suit theme in most of their media products. Even the instruments match the colour code as the guitars are black with white stripes.

Special effects• Towards the end of the video there are

more special effects, for example, in the first image, the rest of the band aren’t playing their instruments, so the video presents this by freezing them in time whilst the two members I circled are still moving and playing/singing.

• The other main special effect is the lead singers head cropped out with a spiral sort of effect behind him. This shot is used a couple of times, mainly when the lyrics are quieter or at the beginning where there are no lyrics at all.

• The third main effect used throughout this video is the motion blur. This effect creates movement and makes things look fast paced.

Summary

• This music video mainly focuses on the band. It has no story and no one else apart from the band members appear on the screen. Showing the band playing their instruments is typical of this genre as the target audience would probably like to see the band live, so showing they can play live is a big factor. The music video has a few special effects, but apart from that it is quite clean.
