Star wars made epic fantasy real. For a generation of people it has defined what the cinema experience is meant to be. Today it is probable that pc games will offer a deeper and more satisfying entertainment solution, but for pure visual and aural pleasure, mixed with basic emotional manipulation, there has never and will never be a better example of cinema than when star wars appeared over 25 years ago. When you think of star wars, you must remember what else was happening at the time. In America, the war in Vietnam had been lost. In the U.K economic disaster was occurring(a 3 day working week, and the army collecting rubbish). It was almost like the two most technically advanced countries in the world were going backwards. Star wars let everybody escape from that reality and reach for a future that was uncertain but ultimately good.

• The Star Wars Franchise is at no.5 on the Highest Grossing Films of all time.

CODES AND CONVENTIONS• Star Wars contains the typical codes and conventions that are usually present in science

fiction movies:• a dystopian society

• advanced weaponry

• artificial intelligence

• spaceships/hovercrafts

• a good side vs a bad side AUDIENCEStar Wars was aimed at a primarily male audience

ranging from the ages 10and up who were interested in science fiction

REPRESENTATION Star Wars has, in a way, a lack of diversity and representation but it still manages to represent the main

groups.

• Women- Leia is the main representation of the females (Luke’s aunt doesn’t count as she has very little screen time) and she is shown as strong and able to handle a crisis but she is basically the only female figure in the film

• Men- there are plenty of male characters in the film that all have different connotations. Darth Vader and the other leaders on the Death Star are shown to be evil whilst Luke is presented as the budding hero and Hans Solo as the insightful guide to help Luke become a hero

• Different races- there is a noticeable lack of people of differing skin colours throughout the movie- and this is something that the new Star Wars is said to have improved on.
