Another popular sport originally from the United Kingdom is rugby. Rugby originates from football: when in 1823. a football player named William Ellis picked the ball with his hands and ran to the opponent's goal, an interest in developing a whole new game was born. It later evolved in different forms, like American or Canadian football. Rugby forms played in Britain are rugby league and rugby union, basically two versions of the same sport that separated in the beginnig of the 20th century. Rugby union is played in southern England, Wales and Scotland, while rugby league is played mostly in the northern English provinces. Rugby season starts in September and it last untill around April. The biggest competition for the British is called the Six Nations Championship, played by England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Italy and France. Scottish fans often unite with Welsh fans against England, and Scotland is known to support France, unless, of course, they play against each other.

SCOTTISH MALTS TRIAL

Page 10: Sport and Recreation in Britain

Open to cars built before 31st December 1981, the “Malts” as it has come to be known has a successful format which includes driving tests, regularities and link sections. The ‘Malts’ has a tradition of sighting main controls and tests at stately homes, castles and distilleries. The time schedule is not too demanding, and navigation is by means of a detailed road book using easy-to-follow Tulip diagrams. Entrants on the classic car tour cover a shorter route and are provided with a specially printed map book, detailed but simple route directions, and touring notes of places of interest along the way. Tour entrants are free to visit whichever attractions they wish, but as long as they arrive at the hotel in time for dinner!

The Notting Hill Carnival is an annual event that since 1965 has taken place on the streets of Notting Hill, Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, London, UK each August, over two days (the August bank holiday Monday and the day beforehand). It is led by members of the West Indian community, particularly the Trinidadian and Tobagonian British population or "Trinis", many of whom have lived in the area since the 1950s. The carnival has attracted around one million people in the past years, making it the second largest street festival in the world after the Rio Carnival held in Brazil.

Page 14: Sport and Recreation in Britain

From Timothy Millett we had a Victorian ceremonial throne with a royal V.R. carving which would have more than likely been used for a royal visit, dated at around Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee circa 1887.The exciting St Patrick's Day Parade takes place every year in London. It involves marching bands, floats, street theatre and more. All 32 Irish counties are represented, dressed in their traditional county colours. Other parade participants include members of London's Irish community and other Londoners.  The parade usually begins at 12 noon in central London and proceeds to Trafalgar Square, where you can enjoy the St Patrick's Day Festival.

Picnic.

Picnic are simply as a pleasure excursion at which a meal is eaten outdoors, ideally taking place in a beautiful landscape such as a park, beside a lake or with an interesting view and possibly at a public event such as before an open air theatre performance, and usually in summer. Descriptions of picnics show that the idea of a meal that was jointly contributed and was enjoyed out-of-doors were essential to a picnic from the early 19th century.Picnics are often family-oriented but can also be an intimate occasion between two people or a large get-together such as company picnics and church picnics. It is also sometimes combined with a cookout, usually a form of barbecue; either grilling, braising, baking, or a combination of all.On romantic and family picnics a picnic basket and a blanket (to sit or recline on) are usually brought along. Outdoor games or some other form of entertainment are common at large picnics.
