IN IT FOR THE MONEYAND SONY
The Facts
• In It For The Money are an independent company who originated from Bridgwater
• As they are an independent company they are more trustworthy and work on a long-scale contract, helping to create a secure fan base around a band.
The Company
• Branched into management• Takes care of everything• Has the same structure as Sony however it has no money
and not as many people • Ironic name as they don’t have much money• The independent record label usually works 50/50 so the
band won’t be in debt. Whereas a big company will take more money to pay for the amount of people working, meaning the band will owe money. This is what makes releasing more songs/albums for a band more difficult.
Making Money
• Big labels are all about making money quickly. For example, Sony Music are signing a lot of artists very quickly and cheaply. This doesn’t benefit them though as only 2% out of 98% are making money and releasing songs or albums.
• This also means that they are quickly dropped from the company.
• Independent labels such as In It For The Money have a much fairer deal as they are all about building up a band’s profile.
New Technology
• The introduction of new technology has meant that bands have been able to promote and advertise themselves and to get them more known.
• New York City Cops have been able to promote their music through blogging, which has travelled worldwide creating a buzz about them.
• Bands can be more independent when starting out as they can also use computer software to create their own music.
• There are lots of free ways to advertise/publisise an artists’ work. Blogs, social networking sites and websites such as YouTube all help towards this.
Positives of Sony Music
• As Sony Music is a big conglomerate, it has a whole network of people that can carry out different jobs. They have a lot more staff and money, meaning they can offer magazines and music companies a lot more than an independent label such as In It For The Money.
• In It For The Money have to outsource most things such as: advertising, recording, promoting and selling. This can take a lot of time and money out of an independent group. Big companies will have a lot of staff to work for different areas.
