Sonrisas de Amor is a local Non Profit Organization comprised of a group of youth peer educators, a U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer, and their director, a local nurse and

Lack of proper public health education and youth orientation & guidance.

Little or no access to primary health care facilities and family planning resources due to lack of local health care infrastructure.

23 years old and has 4 children. She is pregnant with the 5th. The children’s ages range from 8 - 2. She married at 15. She has thought about family planning and not having more children.

Director de Sonrisas de Amor tells mother about family planning discussions offered by Sonrisas de Amor and introduces the local nurse who tends to the health clinic.

The nurse talks of the importance to bring support and help the communities in the most rural areas.

Tour of Mother’s house. Just one room. The room includes her cooking area and 1 bed that all 4 children, herself and her husband share.

Most families is these areas live in similar situations with comparable needs.

Sonrisas de Amor plans and executes participatory workshops in and around Zaragoza, year round. Though youth are the most frequently worked with demographic, women’s groups, teachers, and parents also participate in our workshops. Subjects of our workshops include:

Hopes:Hopes: Over the next year, Sonrisas de Amor hopes to

broaden the reach and deepen the impact of their Educational workshops. At the same time we are trying to support our rural medical clinic by re-inforcing preventative and curative outreach efforts and basic health care services. Ultimately we hope to create a sustainable working model of social services provided to the most in need of populations in the municipalities of Zaragoza and Patzún in the department of Chimaltenango, Guatemala.

Over the next year, Sonrisas de Amor hopes to broaden the reach and deepen the impact of their Educational workshops. At the same time we are trying to support our rural medical clinic by re-inforcing preventative and curative outreach efforts and basic health care services. Ultimately we hope to create a sustainable working model of social services provided to the most in need of populations in the municipalities of Zaragoza and Patzún in the department of Chimaltenango, Guatemala.
