Short film analysis: “about a girl” notes

Tracking shots, continuity editing, didn’t break the 180® rule. The young girl loves to talk, cuts when she changes point, showing her problems.

The cuts always show her reality in life, compared to the story she is telling. Signifies abortion (with girl or in her family) Her baby (impression she is hiding pregnancy) Mum – does nothing to support but would if she could, so does the lottery every

week. Dad – Always distracted by other things (newspaper, pub, football, mates)

Song Lyrics – keeps her dreams alive, gives her hope when she sings Establishing shots – silo wet, performing on stage, shadow in the background,

insignificant. Low angle shot, shows her as having power at the beginning in first shot.

Crane shot – alone, isolated Hoop ear rings, no makeup – young but still grown up. Nike jumper – grey (chav),

sipped to the top (because she is cold or for protection) Dead trees in background Prison – Trapped, no way to escape Dirty – reflecting water, reflection of what she has done and how she lives Slang – swearing Copying mechanism – keep talking Weather – sets mood, depression, miserable Lighting – is very natural Stereotypical of North England (Manchester)
