Information on Clothing

• Shoes

• The Romans made shoes and sandals by fixing strips

of leather to a tough leather or cork base. Soldiers had

to wear a “caliga” which is a boot

• Helmet

• The exact form or design of the helmet varied

significantly over time, between differing unit types.

The soldiers helmet was made of bronze

• Tunic

• The Soldiers would wear knee-length woolen tunic

• Groin Protector

• It was made of decorated leather strips that gave some

protections to the groin in battle

• Shoulder Plates & Body Armor

• Was made of bronze plate armor and was fastened

together with steel rivets. This type of armor was

much less expensive to make than chain mail since

chainmail took a long time to make

• Back Pack

• The soldiers would carry around a “Marius’s Mule”

which was a sac that cared the supplies the soldier

would have need on his tour

• Shield

• The “scutum” was a 22 lbs large

rectangle curved shield made from

three sheets of wood stuck together

and covered with canvas and leather

• Pugio

• This was a dagger worn on the soldiers belt

• Gladius

• This was a short sword

• Javelin

• A long wooden spear with a sharp tip

• The character’s in Julius Caesar the soldiers uniform

would have been warn by Antony, Octavious, Brutus,

and Cassius.
