DIRECTOR

• THE DIRECTOR IS SOMEONE WHO WORKS WITH THE CAST MEMBERS AND THE DESIGNERS OF THE PLAY.

• AS THE DIRECTOR I WOULD ADD MY OWN STYLE TO THE PLAY WHILE PRESERVING THE PLAYWRIGHTS ORIGINAL INTENT.

• MY MAIN GOAL IS TO MAKE SURE THE PLAY RUNS SMOOTHLY AND THAT EVERYONE IS ON THE SAME PAGE.

CHOOSING THE SCRIPT

• I CHOSE THE PLAY BUS STOP. THIS PLAY STOOD OUT BECAUSE IT WAS VERY UNIQUE. I UNDERSTOOD THE PLAY VERY WELL AND IT REALLY SPOKE OUT TO ME BECAUSE OF THE LOVE ASPECT TO IT. I COULD HAVE FUN WITH THE PLAY BY ADDING MY OWN THOUGHTS TO IT.

• THE STORY OF THE PLAY WAS REALLY INTERESTING. IT WAS ABOUT A LOVE- STRUCK MAN GOING AFTER A BEAUTIFUL WOMAN THAT WORKED AT A GENTLEMAN'S CLUB.

THE ACTORS

• CHOOSING THE ACTORS WAS A DIFFICULT TASK. I WANTED TO CAST PEOPLE WHO COULD DISPLAY THE EMOTIONS OF THE CHARACTERS ACCURATELY

• THE ACTORS OF THE PLAY SHOULD BE ABLE TO DISPLAY DIFFERENT EMOTIONS LIKE THE AGGRESSIVENESS OF BO OR THE INNOCENCE OF ELMA.

• TRYING TO FIND THE BEST PEOPLE FOR THE ROLES MEANS THAT I WILL HAVE TO AUDITION PEOPLE

WHY CHOOSE THESE ACTORS

• I CHOOSE THESE ACTORS NOT ONLY BECAUSE THEY ARE THE BEST BUT THEY ALSO WOULD FIT PERFECTLY IN THEIR ROLES.

• CHANNING TATUM COULD BE SENSITIVE BUT TOUGH LIKE BO. MORGAN FREEMAN WOULD ADD A FUNNY SPILL TO CARL AND EMMA ROBERTS WOULD BE A GOOD FIT FOR ELMA

DIRECTORIAL CONCEPT

• THE PLAY WAS SET IN THE 1950'S AND I WOULD LIKE TO KEEP IT THAT WAY. THIS TIME PERIOD WAS VERY IMPORTANT IN WORLD HISTORY AND WOULD FIT WELL IN MY CONCEPT OF THE PLAY

• I ALSO CHOSE TO HAVE AN INTERRACIAL CAST. IN TODAY'S TIME PERIOD, INTERRACIAL COUPLES ARE COMMON SO I WANTED TO ADD THAT ELEMENT TO MY PLAY. I FEEL LIKE THIS WOULD APPEAL TO THE AUDIENCE MORE

SHAPING THE SPINE OF THE PLAY

• FIGURING OUT THE "SPINE" OF THE PLAY IS ESSENTIAL TO GETTING STARTED AS THE DIRECTOR. BY FINDING A "SPINE" FOR THE PLAY IT WILL BETTER HELP ME UNDERSTAND WHERE I SEE THIS PLAY GOING

• THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS PLAY IS TO SHOW THAT YOU SHOULD GET TO KNOW SOMEONE FIRST AND NOT JUDGE A SOMEONE BY THEIR COVER

• THE “SPINE” OR MAIN ACTION OF THE PLAY IS THE INTERACTIONS OF BO AND CHERIE. TO ILLUSTRATE THE "SPINE" OF THE PLAY I WOULD SPOTLIGHT THE MAIN CONFLICT BETWEEN CHERIE AND BO

CONNECTING THE THEME• THE THEME OF THE PLAY IS THAT YOU SHOULD GET TO KNOW SOMEONE BEFORE GETTING

INTO A RELATIONSHIP

• I WOULD SHOW THE THEME THROUGH THE ELEMENTS OF DESIGN HIGHLIGHTING KEY MOMENTS IN THE PLAY.

• THE LIGHTS WOULD SPOTLIGHT ALL OF THE MOMENTS THAT HAD AN INFLUENCE ON THE THEME, LIKE WHEN CHERIE SAYS SHE WOULD MARRY BO AFTER GETTING TO KNOW HIM BETTER.

• THE LIGHTS WOULD ALSO DIM WHEN SOMEONE FLIRTING WITH ANOTHER CHARACTER OR AS SOMEONE WAS TALKING. THE SOUNDS WOULD ALSO PLAY SLOW LOVE MUSIC WHEN SOMEONE WAS SPEAKING THEIR AFFECTION FOR SOMEONE ELSE.

STYLE OF THE PLAY

• THE STYLE THAT I CHOSE FOR THE PLAY IS A REALIST APPROACH KNOWN AS NATURALISM.

• BY USING NATURALISM, THE ACTORS CAN BETTER ILLUMINATE THE "SPINE" OF THE PLAY. THE ACTORS CAN ACT MORE LIKE THEMSELVES AND GO ABOUT THE PLAY LIKE THEY ARE ACTUALLY IN A DINER.

• HAVING THE PLAY IN A DINER ALLOWS FOR THIS STYLE TO THRIVE. I CAN ADD ACTUAL WATER AND ACTUAL FOOD TO THE SET.
