Front page of ‘Undiscover’ Masthead – on the front page the masthead is very large and

covers two thirds on the top row in the rule of thirds, this is not very conventional for an indie magazine. For example, Q takes up the first box, NME takes up half of the whole line and Kerrang takes up the whole line. The use of a black or a white masthead is strong whilst making it look attractive. These colour are conventional for an indie magazine as they reflect the strong attitudes of the audience who are confident in their opinions compared to fans of other genres who can be more main stream and passive. This corresponds to the idea of the binary oppositions being strong versus weak.

House colours – house colours conventionally include red in indie magazines because they have connotations of passion and blood which is associated with committed indie fans. By choosing blue over red I now have more relaxing and carefree connotations and differentiates making it unique from other magazines.

Also, red is associated more with boys whereas the blue, especially the lighter shade attracts more females.

Main coverline – telling the reader about who’s in the main image and what the article on them is about. Some are colloquial creating a relaxed tone that the reader can relate to, it is also making the audience active because the reviews are from audiences and anyone can review anything, this is a good way to get digital natives attracted by using web 2.0. A main coverline is ‘interview with new upcoming artists Hallowed People’ which shows the main focus of artists, the unknown ones; this makes people more interested in the bands and gives them a bigger fan base. There are two coverlines that give information on the best songs/festivals/gigs etc which is very useful for readers as this is where they would go to listen to their music and it has all the dates and places, this is all conventional for indie magazines and most music magazines.

Coverlines – specific to my magazine and conventional for all magazines.

‘Competition: free VIP tickets…’ Shows indie fans would like the chance to win gig tickets Reflects audience profiling

‘Preview of 2014 – why it’s going to rock’ ‘Inside information: summer festivals’

Indie artists play at festivals to get recognition

website Competition information – follows conventions of indie

magazine, use of web 2.0 allowing digital natives the access they want from the magazine.

Image of front page – giving an overview of what is on which page allowing further contents to be given

Editor’s letter – conventional, gives off a friendly invitation encouraging readers to read the magazine.

Content of the magazine – conventional for every magazine, there isn’t a magazine without a contents page

House colours – prominent throughout the whole project and still would be through the whole magazine

Photoshoot with Martha – all about AMEZ

talks to an upcoming artist that finally gets the opportunity to go to America and pursue music career in the indie genre, I can say that this has become possible because of a small indie company linking her to America which is what most artists want. Audience reviews

all about the cool festivals to go to based on the turn out from years before, points of view from public who went there, new albums and songs that have come out reviewed by fans of the magazine. On the page it would say ‘log onto the website to post your review today’, etc. Festival info

festivals play a vital part for indie artists and bands because the amount of people who attend the festivals is huge, so there is no better place to get a bigger fanbase. Also by talking about festivals it intrigues festivalgoers to the magazine which extends the target market and people buying the magazine Top 10 songs to listen to this week

gives an overview of new upcoming artists and their latest songs which are recommened to listen to by the public, not only does this open to digital natives through web 2.0 it also extends fan bases of unknown artists

What actually happened with The Kooks

gives an inside story on a popular indie band which allows the magazine to entice the fans of The Kooks. Offers a long article which would be great for active hedgehog audiences, I think this would appeal more than my DPS that I designed as this does not contain a lot of information. How they all got their claim to fame

gives advice and routes to take when trying to get into the indie genre, also tells the stories of relatively famous artists which makes the audience feel a link to the artists. 10 things you didn’t know about the Arctic Monkeys

allows the audience to create links to the band and increases fan base, because arctic monkeys are really famous anyway it would offer a bigger fan base for my magazine as well. Band reconciling after 20 years

again this offers another chance to read a long article allowing hedgehog thinkers and active audiences to enjoy their spare time

IMAGES

Main image – band of males which still invites males to these magazines but also includes females in the magazine offering female attraction also. My image is not conventional as it is an image from a practising studio which is shown in the mise-en-scene in Leicester whereas conventional magazines would use a photo studio and have a block background colour.

Button pictures – shows relevant pictures of who is going to be featured in further pages

Main image on contents relevant to competition – showing a singer promoting herself and the competition

These both challenge conventional representations of the indie genre being dominated by males as the medium close up in the button connotes importance of appearance because of the focus on the face, it also has a connotation of nudity where we can apply the male gaze, however it can also connote confidence and a challenge to the established parameters of gender-defined music.

Prominent house style

FONT – the font I have used from the masthead is unconventional because both Q and NME have simplistic mastheads whereas this one is very rocky, a bit like Kerrang’s but the font is more bold. The pull quote shows what the band think of themselves by relating to Imagine Dragons, it has implications of a new equilibrium now that they’re getting a bigger and bigger fan base and therefore getting more and more famous just like Imagine Dragons. I have used binary oppositions in the text when talking about the boys’ past and their variation of preference.

Pull out quote Image on dps – 2 thirds on one

page and the other third on the second page

Picture is grungey which is a fashion linked in with indie music

House colours - prominent throughout the whole project and still would be through the whole magazine

Image is unconventional which is good as it makes it a lot more unique and doesn’t have the same layout all the time. It lacks consistency which corresponds to the quirky genre, what’s going to happen next?

DPS - My inspiration

Interview in boxes – creativity, fits in with genre but not conventional, just adds a quirky theme, although mine are in questions

Factfile – conventional for some magazines but is relevant to the article because they’re a new upcoming band that not many people know about so they can find this information out

Subscription box – conventional for all magazines, helps promote the magazine and encourages readers to buy a subscription
