The Conservatory at the American Film Institute identifies and serves future leaders in the art of motion pictures. As an institution with the mission of educating storytellers, we seek those who have stories to tell, and whose language of choice is motion pictures.

The Conservatory is committed to the idea that motion pictures are a major influence on both our culture and society. While teaching the craft of making motion pictures to cinematographers, directors, editors, production designers, producers and screenwriters, the Conservatory is dedicated to the art that each discipline serves — the art of storytelling.

During their two-year residency at AFI, our Screenwriting Fellows do an enormous amount of writing—in addition to acquiring frontline on-the-set experience on their own films and those of their classmates. They go out to meet the professional world (you) with bulging portfolios of screenplays in motion pictures, television, short films and new media, some of which are summarized in this booklet. But summaries can only give concepts: the real test for all writers is how well they get their stories on the page (or screen)— i.e., how well can they write? That question can only be answered by reading the full screenplay, which I urge you to do for any of the following concepts that appeal to you. If you’re looking for talent, you won’t be wasting your time.
