Operation: Protect this PrinceWhat’s essential is invisible to the eye…
“…The opportunity to protect the book with the movie was something I couldn’t pass up.”
— Mark Osborne, DirectorThe Little Prince movie
Osborne is the Academy Award® nominated director of Kung Fu Panda
“… We felt an enormous responsibility to do justice to this timeless novel, which is loved by so many people around the world…
— Aton Soumache, French producerThe Little Prince movie
“… Since the book is so well known and loved all over the world, we felt that we needed to find a director who would be very respectful of the property, but would be able to deliver an entertaining, bold vision as well…”
— Dimitri Rassam, producerThe Little Prince movie
“… I’m hopeful that this movie will appeal to all movie audiences, not just animation enthusiasts.
The book lovers will see that we've protected the book. And if you don't know the book, the film will give you an insight into just how special it is.”
—Jinks Gotoh, producing partner of Mark OsborneThe Little Prince movie
“…He (Osborne) had this great other story, which treated the book as almost another character in the movie. It’s a great way to pay tribute to this classic book, so I was excited and thrilled to be part of it.”
— Jeff Bridges, the AviatorThe Little Prince movie
“…Just like the book, the movie pays attention to the importance of enjoying the journey and our relationships, and not necessarily understanding everything…”
— Rachel McAdams, the MotherThe Little Prince movie
“…[The book] was our guide whenever we were struggling with any aspects of the story. We would read a passage and were always stunned by the beauty and simplicity of it…”
— Bob Persichetti, head of storyThe Little Prince movie
“…The drawings were our first source of inspiration. …We knew it would be a good idea to take one character and show how a book makes this huge impact on one individual child. That was our starting point. Once we began to see the artwork from the artists, it really helped us with our story ideas as well.”
— Irena Brignulli, original screenplayThe Little Prince movie
“I tried as much as possible to respect the original illustrations of the book… … I wondered, ‘How can I make this different while being respectful to the original look?’”
—Celine Desrumaux, production designerThe Little Prince movie
“…I always felt that there’s a little bit of sorrow and world- ‐weariness about the Prince, something that you don’t usually see in an animated movie with a child as its lead. That’s why many of my drawings of him are a little bit melancholy, but at the same time, the Little Prince has a sense of wonder and enchantment about.”
— Peter de Sève, character designerThe Little Prince movie
“This is such an intimate film, and we had to make sure that the relationship between the old Aviator and the Little Girl was believable. To convey their bond and slowly developing friendship on screen was a key challenge.”
— Jason Boose, CG animation supervisorThe Little Prince movie
“All of us working on the film, we could ‘feel’ how passionate he was about the film, how he just wanted to do this amazing story justice. And when you work with someone like that, all you want to do is do justice to their passion and dedication. Mark had so many things going on trying to finish the film, my job as I see it is partly to try and make his life a easy as possible, at least with regards to the sound!”
— Tim Nielsen Sound Designer / Supervising Editor / Re- ‐Recording mixer
The Little Prince movie
“I’m pretty tough—I’m known for my work on ‘The Dark Knight’ and ‘Inception’—but I found myself crying after Mark explained his idea for the movie. I thought hang on... this isn’t happening to me. It was such a moving story that I just couldn’t resist it.”
— Hans Zimmer composer, original soundtrack
The Little Prince movie
“We all responded to the film’s famous images by jamming together in one room. Instead of just using the usual pop songs off the shelf, our music was tailor made. The soundtrack also took its cue from the authentic, handmade nature of the movie.”
— Hans Zimmer Composer, Soundtrack
The Little Prince movie
“It was the chance of a lifetime to build a story from this starting point; the themes of the book are so rich and resonate so much. Additionally, the opportunity to protect the book with the movie was something I couldn’t pass up. When I suggested we build a story around the book, to protect it instead of expand it, I was elated that this was agreeable to the estate.”
— Mark Osborne, director
The Little Prince movie
Before the film took flight…The tale of Mark Osborne’s Magic
Suitcase
In the beginning, not only was Mark Osborne pitching to artists and actors, he was also pitching the movie to distributors all over the world using a “magic suitcase” full of handmade visual aids specifically created to communicate the tone and passion for the project.

“Over the last four years I think I have pitched the movie close to 400 times…An amazingly talented model maker named Joe Schmidt created this suitcase, which held the art book, and told the story of the movie visually,” said Osborne.

“What he created is a true work of art that doesn't just carry the pitch, it displays the sheer ambition of the movie and creative soul of the book in every detail…”

• Lovingly hand-crafted details cover every inch.
• The front had an actual camera lens attached.
It looked like an artifact that the book's narrator, the Aviator, who discovers the Little Prince in a desert, himself might have left behind. Mysterious-looking rivets, gears, vents and metal plates gave the piece a mechanical feel, as if it might rumble to life and fly away on its own. The B-612 is the name of the Little Prince’s home asteroid.

…Here is one of the slides that was inside the 3D slide viewers to reveal the fact that the actual passages of the book The Little Prince (the "story within the story" in our movie) would be made using the completely different realm of stop-motion animation.
And here is the Fox, as imagined by Red Nose Studio as seen inside one of the 3D slide viewers.

“…I had people in tears at the end of the pitch. It was the manifestation of the story and of the danger of this ephemeral story not existing. It became this very emotional way to communicate to people."
— Mark Osborne, DirectorThe Little Prince movie
Rewind to the beginning of the Journey …
“…During the 5 1/2 years it took to make the film, that suitcase traveled the world, charming investors and artists alike, winning over composer Hans Zimmer as well as a stellar cast including Rachel McAdams, Marion Cotillard, Paul Rudd, James Franco, Ricky Gervais and Benecio Del Toro."
