BRIDGE LESSONS - INTERMEDIATENYU Bridge and Spades Club
PRACTICE SCENARIOS FOR LESSON 13Conventions for Competitive
Auctions
Practice Scenario 1
Partner opens 1D and opponent doubles. What do you bid? Your hand:
S: xxxx H: x D: Kx C: KQxxxx
Answer to Scenario 1
If opponent hadn’t doubled, you would have bid 1S here to show your 4-card major. However, this is probably not a contract which you want to play if your RHO is strong in spades (which he should be since he doubled)
Thus, 2C is probably the better call here, showing 6-9 points and long clubs
Practice Scenario 2
Partner opens 1D and opponent doubles. What do you bid? Your hand:
S: KJTxxx H: x D: xxx C: Jxx
Answer to Scenario 2
Bid 2S (weak jumpshift) showing 4-6 points and 6+ spades
If you had a few more points, it would’ve been better to bid 1S instead or maybe redouble
Practice Scenario 3
Partner opens 1S and opponent doubles. What do you bid? Your hand:
S: AJxx H: xxx D: xx C: xxxx
Answer to Scenario 3
Bid 3S as a pre-emptive raise
Practice Scenario 4
Partner opens 1D and opponent doubles. What do you bid? Your hand:
S: xxx H: xx D: Axx C: Qxxxx
Answer to Scenario 4
Pass. If opponent had passed, you would’ve been obliged to bid 1NT. Here, however, you have the option to pass, so take it!
Practice Scenario 5
Opponent opens 1D. What do you bid? Your hand:
S: x H: KQxxx D: Kx C: KQJTx
Answer to Scenario 5
Bid 2NT as the unusual 2NT
Practice Scenario 6
Opponent opens 1D. What do you bid? Your hand:
S: Jxxxx H: AJTx D: Axx C: A
Answer to Scenario 6
Bid 1S. All your alternatives are flawed 1NT would show 15-17 points You are too weak to takeout double with only 2
out of the other 3 suits Michael’s cuebid requires 5-5
Practice Scenario 7
Opponent opens 1H. What do you bid? Your hand:
S: QTxxx H: xx D: KJxxx C: x
Answer to Scenario 7
Pass. You have the right distribution for Michael’s but not enough points. If partner bids one of your suits, you can happily support him.
Practice Scenario 8
Opponent opens 1S. What do you bid? Your hand:
S: KQ H: A D: xxxxx C: Qxxxx
Answer to Scenario 8
Pass. You have the right distribution and points for Unusual 2NT. However, almost none of your points are in your two long suits. Your hand looks better for defense than offense.
Practice Scenario 9
Opponent opens 1S. What do you bid? Your hand:
S: - H: x D: AKQxxx C: AKJxxx
Answer to Scenario 9
Bid the Unusual 2NT. Whichever minor partner bids, raise it to slam.
Practice Scenario 10
Opponent opens 1D. What do you bid? Your hand:
S: KQxxx H: A D: xx C: Axxxx
Answer to Scenario 10
Bid 1S. You would love to have a two-suited bid available, but there is none. 1S is your best option here.
Practice Scenario 11
Opponent opens 1S. What do you bid? Your hand:
S: - H: AKQJTx D: xx C: Qxxxx
Answer to Scenario 11
Bid 2H. You may be tempted to bid Michael’s here. However, your heart suit is much stronger and longer than your club suit. Also, it is a major. You are probably better off showing your heart suit.
