Music Videos

M83 - WaitThis video has many conventions of chillwave music videos. An unusual, or sometimes little story plot, are involved with these types of music videos. The video is an exaggeration of our music video, as we will have someone walking around like the little girl in the video while they’re on drugs. In parts of the video we can see a psychedelic element, when the boy is inside this pyramid he starts to show symptoms of a seizure, or “tripping”. In our music video we want to use this psychedelic element to show that the character will be high.

Giraffage & XXYYXX – Even ThoughIn this music video, it is footage of someone filming the nature as they drive by, and later the image was distorted, giving a kaleidoscope effect. The video is just about nature and visual effects with no person

involved in the video for some type of story. The purpose is to make the audience watch something that relates to the song they’re listening to. We’re going to incorporate a nature into our video, but will have

people in it. Video set driving along a forest being filmed, using a quick crabbing shot – this creates a “trippy” feel, which correlates with the genre of music chillwave. The shots include all these disjointed images of the forest. As the viewer it feels like we’re going on a journey with the person recording the video. The colours in the video make it seem surreal and that it feels like a hallucination. These visual effects creates confusion to the audience. These bright blues, pinks, whites all contrast each other and

make the video picturesque almost in the hallucination style.

Bondax – Giving It All

This videos narrative is about a girl who is torn between two guys, but ends up running away with the man from the beginning of the video. A story between a young couple is quite common in chillwave. The lyrics relate to the story, as the boy is “giving it all” to be with this girl but there is another guy in his way. In the video, bright colours are used to contrast with the couple and their youth. They’re live in the moment type of people, as in the video when they use someone else’ swimming pool and then run away from the scene.

XXYYXX – Never Leave The video is similar to Even Though because this also features nature, except there are animals (jellyfish) featuring in it. Never Leave has a psychedelic element, as the beat changes so does the colours of the jellyfish. The colours are bright and vivid, catching the audience’s eye, and the movement of the jellyfishes tentacles match the change in the beat. Same as XXYYXX’s other music video, the focus is more on the song but the visuals in the video relate to the song. We’ll use nature in our music video as well as people.

Bonobo - CirrusThe video is very surreal, with repeated images playing again and again. It creates disillusion as these images combine to form giant robots trampling across earth. It contrasts older generation (50’s housewives) and modern generation (with the robots). There isn’t any sign of cutting as it’s one continuous shot, achieving a hallucinogenic feel with its repetition of overlapping images. This confusion is a typical convention of chillwave with a minimal narrative. We want to incorporate some of these conventions into our music video.
