TO MARS30 SECONDS“Fame never came quickly to us, we banged on doors and dropped demo’s to everyone we

knew. There’s just a little irony to the name - that’s intentional...”

Jared Leto, Shannon Leto and Tomo Milicevic formed 30 seconds to mars in LA,California in 1998 the bands first single didn’t break into the charts until 2002 the single itself received some criticism and did not do well commercially.

In a quote to fans Jared said “Fame never came quickly to us, we banged on doors and dropped demo’s to everyone we knew. There’s just a little irony to the name - that’s intentional...”. 30 seconds to mars did not become worldly recognized until 2005 with their record a beautiful lie which received multiple certifications globally from this the band has slowly gained more fans putting them in one of the top spots in their industry. 30 seconds to mars are well known for their festival acts and stage performances, and fusing a wide variety of music genres to create their own unique sound. The bands live energy has been compared to the energy of acts such as Pink Floyed, The cure, Tool and U2 thus attracting a wide audience, the band is also a big hit within teenage

culture from their spiritual and philosophical lyrics. The band got its name from a rare manuscript that had caught Shannons attention, the reason Shannon gave for the name was “that the fact that we’re so close to something however yet so physically so far away” Shannon related this to the bands aim in for the spot within the music industry. The band has had fame before their time in the music industry with Jared Leto starring as a Hollywood actor in a series of films, however the

band did not let this throw them into the spotlight and gained success on the strength of their music. Jared wrote the majority of the songs, and the band started playing small gigs at various pubs and clubs in

California. This later led to the band being scouted by Immortal records, shortly after this in 1999 virgin records entered into the deal giving 30 seconds to mars the big break they craved.

On entering the studio it’s easy to see why 30 seconds to mars have made it so big within their industry, with their presence in the room and their look it’s clear to see why they are the biggest selling band in their industry. - Words and pictures: Poppy Rowe
