LOCAL NATIVES – WIDE EYES
LOCAL NATIVES - WIDE EYES
BACKGROUND ON THE SONG
• „Wide Eyes‟ is an indie song which was written by Ryan Hahn the guitarist and vocalist for
Local Natives coming from the album Gorilla Manor released in 2009 in the UK on
infectious records and in February 2010 on Frenchkiss Records.
• This song was influenced by „The Buddha Boy‟ in Nepal after meditating in the jungle for
10 months without eating, drinking or even moving.
Hahn: “I wrote the lyrics after seeing a TV special about a boy in Nepal [..] we already had
the lyrics „oh to see it with my own eyes‟ but the verses came about after watching these
thousands of people swarming to witness and study this seemingly miraculous event.”
• Hence the lyrics „no food or water, for the better part of ten months. Quietly he
sat, between the folds of a tree trunk.‟
• After the writing of the song, the band wanted it to make the album and last minute fit it on
the album. However, there is another suggestion that the song is about an LSD trip and
the video itself would suggest this too.
OUR MUSIC VIDEO
• Our music video will be performance and narrative based as we have researched the meaning and background to the song we found it was influenced by a young boy who meditated for 10 months trying to seek enlightenment. (click for documentary.) However, the music video by Local Natives would suggest otherwise and that the song lyrics are perhaps about an LSD trip.
• In our music video we are hoping to introduce a band to perform to our chosen song and act along with the narrative. As of yet our shot ideas are not clear and in any order. The majority of ideas will come as we film and edit our music video, our ideas may change throughout the process.
• Our music videos style will try to be kept original. We have looked at many other music videos and we like the idea of showing a bit of „a day in the life‟ in our narrative and showing the band outside gigs and practices. The band/actors attire will be casual as within the indie genre this is what we tend to find with the bands.
• We will also try to include illustrative shorts fitting in with the lyrics of the song. These ideas are:„Now they're placing it on their tongues.‟ with the actors taking a small piece of sugar paper to give the effect that they‟re taking LSD.„Quietly he sat, between the folds of a tree trunk.‟ hopefully here we could reenact the „Buddha Boy of Nepal‟
OUR MUSIC VIDEO CONT.
• We are hoping that we could use green screen for our shot „quietly he sat, between the
folds of a tree trunk‟ for when we‟re trying to reenact, we originally wanted to take clips of
some amateur footage but due to plagiarism we will have to stick to reenactment.
However we are trying to change the reality of it in to parody so that it fits in with the rest
of the video (the band on a trip).
• We are hoping to find a good location for the rest of the video, we are hoping to rent out a
room with permission where the band can play and it can look like a live gig, this includes
The Red Room or Odd Bar.
