– Are you here to see Tristan?– Yes. I wanted him to meet my friend, Chantal.– Please come in. Grandpa peeked into Tristan’s

bedroom. – Derek’s here to see you with a new

friend.

Ding, Dong!– Bonjour, Pierre, dit Grand-père.

Tu es venu voir Tristan ?– Oui. Je voulais lui présenter mon

amie, Chantal. – Entrez donc.Grand-père jeta un coup d’oeil dans

la chambre de Tristan: – Pierre est venu te voir

avec une nouvelle amie.

– I don’t want to see anyone now, Tristan said.– Did something happen that you’d like to talk

about? Grandpa Jake asked.– No, but I don’t want to meet new friends right

now.– Hmmm, that reminds me of a story about Old

Budder.– Oh, please tell it.– Well, what if we invite Derek and Chantal to come

and listen to the story as well?– Okay, replied Tristan.

– Je ne veux voir personne, fit Tristan.– Veux-tu me dire ce qui ne va pas ?

demanda Grand-père.– Non, mais je n’ai pas envie

de rencontrer de nouveaux amis. – Hmmm, cela me rappelle

l’histoire du vieux Mondéo. – Oh, raconte-la moi, s’il te

plaît ! – Et si nous invitions Pierre et Chantal ? Ils pourraient aussi écouter l’histoire.

– D’accord, répondit Tristan.

Goby was anxious for Old Budder to meet his new mermaid friend, Camille, since it was Budder’s good advice that had helped Goby make friends with her.

Gobie avait très envie de présenter sa nouvelle amie, Camille la sirène, au vieux Mondéo. Après tout, c’était grâce à ses bons conseils qu’ils étaient devenus amis.

– There you are! Goby exclaimed. I’ve been looking all over for you.

– And why would you be looking for me? Budder asked grumpily.

– I wanted you to meet Camille. Is something wrong?

– Ah! Te voici ! s’écria Gobie. Je te cherchais partout.

– Et pourquoi me cherchais-tu ? grogna le vieux Mondéo.

– Je voulais te présenter Camille, répondit Gobie. Mais qu’est-ce qui ne va pas ?

– No! answered

Old Budder. I’d just prefer not to be disturbed. Just then two eyes

peeked through the coral where Budder sat.

– Well, hello! Camille exclaimed upon finding them. Are you trying to hide?

– Ça va, repartit Mondéo. Mais je préfère qu’on me laisse

tout seul.C’est alors que deux yeux le

regardèrent furtivement à travers les coraux où il se cachait.

– Eh, bonjour ! s’écria Camille en l’apercevant. Est-ce que tu te caches ?

– Now why did you have to bring her here? Old Budder grumped.

– So you’re Old Budder? Camille asked with a smile.– I am, Budder muttered.– Well, it’s very nice to meet you! – Budder said that he’d like to be alone right now,

whispered Goby.– Oh, I’m sorry, Camille said. Did something

happen that made you sad?

– Pourquoi l’as-tu amenée ici ? ronchonna Mondéo, en s’adressant à Gobie.

– Tu es donc Mondéo ? demanda Camille en souriant. – Oui, c’est moi, marmonna-t-il. – Eh bien, heureuse de te rencontrer !– Mondéo m’a dit qu’il préférait ne pas être dérangé

pour l’instant, lui chuchota Gobie. – Oh,

je suis désolée, fit Camille. Mais pourquoi es-tu triste ?

– Now why does everyone think something has

to be wrong with me? Budder asked angrily. I just want to be left alone!Goby and Camille felt bad that Old

Budder wasn’t happy. What could they do to cheer him up?

– I’m sorry, Old Budder said. I don’t mean to be rude, I’m just not having such a great day.

– That happens to me sometimes, too, Camille said.

– What do you do to feel better? Budder asked.– My father once taught me a little rhyme. He

told me to quote it every time I was having a ‘not so good’ day, and it would help me to be happy.

– Qu’est-ce que vous avez tous à penser que je ne vais pas bien ? répliqua Mondéo, de mauvaise humeur. Je veux simplement qu’on me laisse tranquille !

Gobie et Camille étaient tristes de le voir malheureux. Que pouvaient-ils bien faire pour lui remonter le moral ?

– Je regrette, fit Mondéo, je ne voudrais pas être impoli, mais aujourd’hui j’ai des idées noires.

– Ça m’arrive aussi, répondit Camille.– Et qu’est-ce que tu fais pour t’en débarrasser ?

demanda Mondéo.– Un jour, mon père m’a appris un petit poème. Il

m’a dit de le réciter chaque fois que j’aurais le cafard, pour retrouver ma bonne humeur.

Camille recited sweetly:

– At times when I am feeling low,I’ll think of all the love I know;I will count up all of life’s good,And be happy, like I should!”

– Does it work? Old Budder asked.– Yes. The idea is to think of the good

things that you have, Camille explained.

D’une voix douce, Camille récita :

– Quand parfois je suis dépriméeJe pense à ceux qui m’ont aimée,Aux bonnes choses, à mes amis, Et ça me rend heureux d’être en vie.

– Et ça marche ? demanda Mondéo.– Oui. L’important, c’est de penser à toutes les bonnes choses de la vie, expliqua Camille.

– I’ll begin. I’m so happy for the refreshing water in the ocean.

– I am happy for a beautiful reef to live in, Goby said.

– À moi de commencer, dit Camille. J’aime l’eau fraîche

et pure de l’océan.– J’aime ce

magnifique récif de corail où nous

vivons, fit Gobie à son tour.

– I’m glad for my favorite spot, hidden in the coral, Old Budder said.

– It makes me happy when I think of those who love me, Camille continued.

– I’m glad for a chance to make new friends, Old Budder said. After thinking on some of the good things that I have, I feel much better.

– I do, too, said Goby.

– J’aime ma petite cachette dans les coraux où je vais me réfugier, dit Mondéo.

– Je pense à tous ceux qui m’aiment et ça me rend heureuse, poursuivit Camille.

– Je suis content d’avoir pu me faire de nouveaux amis, lança Mondéo. Maintenant que j’ai pensé à toutes ces bonnes choses, je me sens beaucoup mieux.

– Moi, aussi, dit Gobie.

Camille smiled. – I like making others happy!– I have an idea, said Old Budder. There’s an old sunken

ship not too far away. Shall we go check it out?And off the three swam, happy for the adventure—

but most of all, happy for a chance to become friends.aka

– Grandpa Jake has lots of fun stories, Derek said.

Camille sourit.– J’aime rendre les autres heureux, dit-elle.– J’ai une idée, conclut Mondéo. Je connais une

vieille épave pas très loin d’ici. Et si on allait l’explorer ?

Et tous trois se mirent à nager, ravis de se lancer dans une nouvelle aventure.

Mais surtout, ravis de s’être fait de nouveaux amis.

– They’re special because they help teach you important lessons, Grandpa Jake said. What did Old Budder learn in this story?

– I think it was for him to be more happy and cheerful, Chantal said.

– That he shouldn’t be so grumpy, Derek added.– Well, when Budder started thinking happy

thoughts, began Tristan, he didn’t remember why he was grumpy. Then he was able to make a new friend.

– Et en plus, ces histoires vous enseignent d’importantes leçons, ajouta Grand-père. À votre avis, qu’a-t-il appris, le vieux Mondéo, dans cette histoire ?

– Qu’il devait être plus heureux, plus joyeux, répondit Chantal.

– Et pas aussi grincheux, renchérit Pierre.– Quand Mondéo s’est mis à penser aux bonnes

choses, constata Tristan, il a oublié pourquoi il était de mauvaise humeur. Et alors, il a pu se faire une nouvelle amie.

– I’m sorry for being grumpy earlier, Tristan apologized. I’m glad for a chance to be friends with you, Chantal, and that you’re my friend already, Derek.

– Je regrette d’avoir été de mauvaise humeur tout à l’heure, s’excusa Tristan. Pierre, je suis content que tu sois mon ami. Et toi Chantal, je suis content que tu sois devenue mon amie.

When you are sad,

think on good things, and you’ll be happier.
