After looking at the song lyrics again and thinking

about what type of props we’d need, we decided

that it might be useful to have a key prop used throughout our video.

In the lyrics, the singer mention the ‘legacy’ of a friend staying

with him. We thought that this could be represented by a book

– symbolic of fables and legends. These are used

frequently in films and other media to represent a story or a

memory, and is therefore a good intertextual reference for

our video.

Starting to shoot photographs for our photo-board also made us think about what shot types we needed, and we found that

close ups were more mysterious and subtle. I

personally liked the way props were filmed in close up in Jeff

Buckley’s ‘Grace’ – quick flashes that are abstract and symbolic.

The central book used could also provide a bit more narrative to the

story, as our target audience research showed this was

something quite a lot of people expected from a music video. The

central ‘legacy’ book would be searched for by the singer, and

once found, would lead the singer out of the dark interior of the barn

into the light exterior of the countryside.
