My British Film:DIANA

• DIANA is distributed by Entertainment One UK

• Nationality: UK• Story Synopsis: During the last two years of

her life, Princess Diana embarks on a final rite of passage: a secret love affair with Pakistani heart surgeon Hasnat Khan.

• Genre: A Biographical Drama

Entertainment One UK: An Introduction:

• Entertainment One, Ltd., also known as eOne, is an entertainment corporation operating in the United States, Canada, the UK, Spain, Ireland, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Australia and New Zealand.

• Entertainment One began operations in 1973 in Ontario, Canada, as Records on Wheels Limited (‘ROW’), founded and operated by Vito Ierullo and Don Ierullo, focusing on retail sales of recorded music. In the late 1970s, ROW began to distribute recorded music for third-party retailers in Canada. For more than 20 years, entertainment content distribution became ROW’s primary focus as the company expanded into video, purchasing one of Canada’s largest home entertainment distributors, Video One Canada. In November 2003, ROW listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange as ROW Entertainment Income Fund. It changed its name to Entertainment One Income Fund. The role of Chief Executive Officer of Entertainment One Income Fund was given to the current CEO of eOne by Vito Ierullo.

• In June 2005, Entertainment One Income Fund acquired Koch Entertainment, North America’s largest independent music label and a large U.S. distributor of home-entertainment products. The combined company, renamed Entertainment One (a.k.a. eOne), had a comprehensive U.S.-Canadian distribution network and began acquiring rights for specialty content. In 2007, in a move to fund expansion into independent, feature-film distribution and rights ownership, eOne's investors accepted a private equity takeover by a unit of UK-based Marwyn Investment Management valued at $188 million and listed on London’s Alternative Investment Market.

• DIANA was distributed by the UK branch of this company, thus being ‘Entertainment One UK’

Pre-Production:Where the story came from:

BRINGING DIANA'S STORY TO THE SCREEN The idea for DIANA was generated in-house at Ecosse Films several years ago. Thestory the filmmakers wanted to tell was the love story between Diana and Dr. Hasnat Khan, aBritish Pakistani heart surgeon. "It seemed to us that it was the key to understanding the lasttwo years of her life," says Bernstein. Although the producers knew they wanted to make themovie, they weren't confident they could take it forward into development until the inquestshad taken place into Diana's death. At the inquest, Khan went on record confirming he hadhad a relationship with Diana. "He went into quite a bit of dignified detail, which wasextremely helpful to us in terms of deciding that that period in her life was now history,"explains Bernstein. "We decided now we could interpret that and make a film based onfacts."From the outset, Bernstein wasn't interested in making a typical biopic about Diana. They set about to make a film that focused on who Diana became in those last two years, rather than on the tragedy of how she died. "If you're looking at a famous person's life youhave to consolidate it into a specific time period and through a key relationship, that islargely unknown, you can clarify the filmmaker's interpretation of that person’s life," heexplains."Diana became herself in those two years and we're very lucky that that journey istied up in a love story," Bernstein adds. "Diana did a lot of good and was a pioneer in termsof bringing awareness to landmine victims which is important to revisit. The way that shefelt played a strong part in terms of her ability to be more confident and become the womanshe became at the end of her life. Hasnat was a very key component towards that happening."The producers approached Stephen Jeffreys, a prominent playwright and film writerto bring their story to the screen. At the time they were already working with him on a filmabout Florence Nightingale. "We wanted to work with Stephen because he's a fantastic writerof character and he's also a very dexterous writer," Bernstein states. The producers met with Jeffreys and presented him with a three-page story outlineabout Diana and Khan. He went away and returned a few days later with pages of coloredcharts plotting the film's story. "I remember poring over these charts with Ecosse and ourresearchers in the café at Waterstone’s in Piccadilly and thinking we had something special,"he recalls.

Pre-production:

• German director Oliver Hirschbiegel sets out his vision for DIANA to become a biographical drama of the famous figures years before her death.

• The screenplay was based upon Kate Snell’s 2001 book ‘Diana: Her last Love’, which was written by Stephen Jeffreys. In Pre-production key scenes where mapped out before-hand that have been famously captured and depicted by the camera and the public eye. E.g.- Dodi Fayed on his family yacht (that may also be seen on the secondary posters that where released for the promotion of the film).

• The film assigned Scottish producer Douglas Rae (whom was executive producer for ‘Monarch of the Glen’) along Robert Bernstein.

• Production designer Kave Quinn needed to make sure that the film would fit into the time period of the late 1980’s to mid 90’s.

• The Cast: the cast of any film is possibly one of the most crucial elements to pre-production. It is important that the actors hired fit their roles, but also by assigning distinguished or trending actors, a film may be fortunate to gain a better percentage of profit. The job of casting goes down to the casting director and his/her team.

• The Cinematographer Rainer Klausmann worked on DIANA, he being the films main visual collaborator, Along with director Hirschbiegel.

• The British cinematography system: In the British system, the director of photography ("DOP"), sometimes credited as the lighting cameraman, is responsible for lighting the set and the visual look of the film, but has no final say over more purely camera operating-based visual elements such as framing. This system means that the director consults the lighting cameraperson for lighting and filtration, and the operator for framing and lens choices. "DOP" is the British and Canadian acronym for "director of photography

Production: Continued…Acting preparation:• Interview wit Naomi Watts:• She has already claimed she was given permission from beyond the grave by Diana to play her in a new film. • Now Naomi Watts has revealed she was so determined to make her portrayal of the Princess of Wales perfect that

she became obsessed with her controversial Panorama interview with Martin Bashir. • Miss Watts, 44, has admitted she repeatedly watched the 1995 programme – even while she exercised.

• ‘I ran the Martin Bashir TV interview so often that it got to the point where I was watching it on my iPhone while I was out jogging,’ she told Hello! magazine.

• ‘I had five minutes of her walk, five minutes of her wave, five minutes of her laugh that I’d watch again and again.• ‘She laughed a lot, actually, and had a cheeky sense of humour and would crack jokes you wouldn’t expect a

princess to crack.’• ‘He was someone she trusted right away,’ Miss Watts said. ‘She was fascinated by his mind.• ‘He was clever and traditional. She knew he was never going to exploit her.• 'People would always be following her: but she did end up finding a connection with this one man. And I think that,

despite the tragedy, that’s an uplifting story. • Playing the Princess was, says Watts, her hardest ever role.• ‘I kept wondering to myself “Would she like it?”,’ she reveals.

Watts as Diana, during production. The Directors Note:To portray Diana, the filmmakers looked no further than the British-born actressNaomi Watts, a two-time Academy Award® nominee for her leading roles in 21 GRAMSand THE IMPOSSIBLE. "I don't know who else would have been right and who could havepulled it off," says the director. "Naomi's an exquisite actress and is outstandingly good. Shehas the ability to be a chameleon. You know it's her and at the same time it’s definitely thatcharacter and in this case you're watching Diana. That's an exceptional gift."As an actress, Watts is better known for doing contemporary films. "This film is verynear contemporary so we need it to feel quite edgy and real. Naomi brings all of thosequalities to the screen," says Bernstein. "She's a very brave actress and her prior films havelargely dealt with intense emotions. We knew she had the real range of ability and courage tofulfil the role."

Post Production:• DEFO: Post production is

when the director works with the film editor to assemble the raw footage into a final film. The director also works with the sound editor and music director/composer to create the film’s soundtrack.

• Editing: The editor of the film was Hans Funk. He was given the recorded footage that was taken during production, making sure to select key footage (possibly deleting scenes so as for the film to run into its full run time of 113 minutes). His job was also to make sure that the film flowed with suitable transitions as well as selecting right music for certain time of a scene. Or example sad piano at the death of the princess.

Posters for the film were hung at Place de l'Alma in Paris, near the entrance to the tunnel where the Princess of Wales died in a car accident in 1997. After an uproar, the posters were eventually removed at the request of French distributor Le Pacte.

Distribution: Continued…• The close up shot of watts signifies the importance of the

character she is playing. she is seen smiling and looking towards one side, which helps to encapsulate the warmness and approachableness of the character, inviting audiences to succumb to the image and making them want to watch the film. the contents of the film itself is most certainly royalty, the theme greatly being conveyed through the poster. the many blues of the jewels, earrings, full bleed background and the symbol of a crown above the blue title of Diana all connote a sense of innocence, purity and royalty, the simple white pearls adding to this effect.

The sell/ Plug Line 'The Legend is never a real story' reveals to us, as a reader, that the films is specifically directed towards the audience whom were aware of the distinguished figure that was Diana through the 80s and 90s. the sell line almost suggest that you need to know much about her already so as to understand the specific point in her life of which the film aims to capture.

to add the crown above the masthead of Dianna, not only associates her with royalty, but also signifies that she is the mother of future king William, and grandmother to Prince George. The close connection of Dianna being with her son and grandson (especially there being no coincidence that prince William and Kate Middleton would happen to have the future air to the throne on the same year) is a rather clever idea for the majority of the country will at the moment be feeling rather patriotic, with a the jubilee and Olympics having been and gone, as well as the birth of the prince George- they wanted to further their patriotism.

an 8% approval rating based on reviews from 95 critics and an average score of 3.5/10. The consensus states: "Naomi Watts tries hard in the title role, but Diana buries her efforts under a shoddy script and clumsy direction." On Metacritic, the film has a 35 (out of 100), based on 28 reviews.

• David Edwards from The Mirror said it was a "cheap and cheerless effort that looks like a Channel 5 mid-week matinee" and that "Wesley Snipes in a blonde wig would be more convincing", awarding the film one star out of five. Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian also awarded it one star out of five and called the film "car crash cinema".

• Joshua Rothkopf of Time Out New York called Watts' performance "extraordinary" and gave the film 3 stars out of 5, calling it "a restrained biopic that affords its subject the romantic privacy that life denied her."[ Nigel Andrews of the Financial Times said that "once again Watts supplies the wattage" but that her performance is "frighteningly isolated... the compensating passion in a torpid drama. "Jim Schembri of 3AW praised Watts' "impressive performance" but remarked that the film "could actually have done with another half-hour putting more meat onto the bones of these underdeveloped chapters of her story. " Dominic Corry of flicks.co.nz called the film "bad in the blandest way possible" and lamented that "Watts is let down by the Mills & Boon-level script". Fionnuala Halligan of Screen Daily also criticised the writing, saying that Watts' "brave performance should not be under-estimated given the poverty of the dialogue and the pressure of the part."

• Naomi Watts was nominated for a Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actress for her performance in the film, and also for Movie 43.

• AMAZON reviewers have rated the film very poorly, ranging manly in the 1/5 category.

Overall this British film was a flop.

team to utilize the same techniques of other animated films. The process for crafting ‘The LEGO Film’ by way was relatively standard – the animation team started with a fully hand-drawn version of the script, before moving into what is known as “layout” (a rough animation that centers on imagining both character and “camera” placement), followed by actual animation, and then lighting and grading (which turns flat animation into something very real-looking). They also used a modeling program that approximated the experience of snapping LEGOs together, one so intelligent that it would reject brick combinations that wouldn’t work in real life

Distribution: Continued...THE LEGO MOVIE: Poster 1: Analysis:The poster is set in a multitude of bright primary

colours such as red or blue. These colours not only gain the attention of passers by, but the dominating colours of both red and blue appeal to both boys and girls, of which the target gender for this film is neutral. The colours being primary illustrate and attract the main target audience which is for children. The proxemics of the characters are placed in the centre of the poster, with well know figures such as Batman visible- this is used once again to act as a ‘taster’ for the audience as well as to attract viewers with such recognised franchises such as the character of Superman, who is seen from within the poster. The pull line is effective for it mentions a ‘nobody’ being important. This is a good, positive message towards children. This may is an also a clear example of the gratification theory, as many children have experienced being unwanted or feeling incapable. They may now have the option to relate with the main character, and thus feel more compelled to watch the film.
