Conventions of a music video (love the way you lie – whole song)

Beginning shots- In the very first shot, it’s an extreme close up of Rihanna’s face, clearly showing the extreme makeup on her eyes and bright red hair. Her bright red hair matches the background which happens to be flames burning brightly. Her composition is he being placed to the right, allowing the viewers a clear idea of something being burned in the background.

Mise en scene-Costume: For both of the singers, there costumes consist of being tight and flashy on there top half, for the woman this gives of a feminine, sexual and rough side to her by wearing a black top and showing a hint of breast, for the man this shows off his masculine side by showing off his muscles in a tight-ish vest top. For the actor and actress, there wearing very casual but similar clothing to represent the singers. For example the female is wearing short shorts, and a vest top, showing off quite a lot of skin and the man is wearing jeans with a black vest top to show off his arm muscle.Makeup: In the first shot we can clearly see that her makeup is to express the story of the song in this video. Her hair is meant to represent the fire, scared emotions and made to make her stand out as different as she’s one of the main singers and not the main actress. She has quite vibrant, black eyes, this increase the sadness that is meant to be expressed through the song and the way the singers look. The actress uses only mascara and no black eye shadow because we need to clearly see the depression through her eyes and look as if she’s just having a day at home so no need to dress up big.

Page 3: Conventions of a music video

Lighting: the lighting is quite dark on the acting parts to represent that their life is no way near perfect and happy, so the old light part on this video is the fire mainly, this shows that the fire has only been the good thing that has happened. When it shows the window after she clamed out of it, it shows the sun peering through, this represents a happy ending for her as she’s got away from this life.Location: when we get a look of the small house on fire and Eminem rapping an a field of wheat, it gives the influence that there living cheep, out in the country side in an old building. This is an area that can easily and quickly catch on fire as it’s a very dry area.Props: The main props that have been used are house hold objects such as a quilt, beer bottles, doors and wall to show the anger of their argument, plus the fire to represent that everything has come to an end.Actor/actresses: Rihanna and Eminem have dressed similarly to the actor and actress, allowing them to become intertwined in what happening as they sing about the relationship.

Page 4: Conventions of a music video

Composition: For Rihanna, there are more centre, extreme close ups to show her facile expressions and makeup clearly, For Eminem, it’s mostly establishing shots of him either in a field of corn that represents where they live, it’s in the middle of know where or the fact that it can catch on fire easily, or out side the burning house with Rihanna.Sound: Through the whole video the music jumps from diegetic to non-diegetic, starts of diegetic to introduce the female singer singing about the couples relationship which is when is cross cuts to the actor and actress playing the part of the couple. Then as soon as the rap starts, that introduces Eminem, the male rapper, this allows the audience to see what this singer looks like. The music in the background is non-diegetic as there are no sings of a music instrument in the video. Colour: When the singers are on screen the colours are bold and don't intertwine with each other, but with the actor and actress scenes the colours that surround them tend to blend in as there all quite dull so the object that really mater are focused on, such as the people and the fire near the beginning and end of there scenes.

Airplanes (first minute)

Beginning shot- The very beginning shot is of the rapper dancing to this slow turn in a mid shot. The audience can only see of silhouette this man dancing, making him seem mysterious but sad and lonely as he’s dancing on his own in an empty room.

Mise en scene-Costume: The male singer is wearing quite hidden clothes such as a hoodie, wanting to hide himself from what has changed but hoodies tend to be what rappers wear as there big and bulky, making them seem bigger. The female is wearing an extremely tight outfit that brings out her skimpy little body, feminine but young is what it shows. The man also seems to be wearing gold chains to enhance the fact that he’s the rapper as there stereotypically know to where them. Lighting: Constantly though out the video, there are beams of light being shun down on both singers and narrative, this represents the fact their at a club or are the area of where everyone was once.Makeup: The woman singing has her hair up in two buns either side of her head, this making her seem quite childish, young and immature, making her relate back to her past of being young.

Page 6: Conventions of a music video

Location: The narrative actors/ actresses are placed in a hall where a party is being gathered and the singers are placed in these empty halls where I would guess is where the party was in the past. There going back to the area to remember all of the good, relaxed and fun time that they had back in the day.Props: In the narrative drinking glasses, a camera and a photo have been used together to symbolize a party and memories through the photo.Actor/actress: The people in the narratives seem to be quite young, with in their late teens, early 20’s, this age group of people are stereotypically known for there partying, drinking and going out. They are basically showing the past of the singers life's, how it use to be all fun before they had to go to work and grow up. Composition: When the camera is focused on the male singer, it mostly tends to be a an establishing shot to show where all the good time happened. When the camera is on the narrative, it’s a close up of a bunch of people having a good time in a crowd, this allows the viewers watching to get the idea of how busy that area was. But when the woman was singing, it was either close ups or long shots of her body with a bold background, making an increasing impact of how lowly she is now as everyone has grown up and gone away from that kind of party scene.

Sound: There are many diegetic parts where the male, and female are singing along to there own parts, there is also one other type of diegetic part when the rapper is clapping to the music, when there are clapping sounds with in the song. The non-diegetic parts are to show emotion through the singers face and body language, plus there are parts in the narrative where it's non-diegetic. When people are dancing in the narrative, to a different turn but the footage has been slowed down to suit this song instead. Colour: the colours that are being used are dreamy whites, blues and yellows in the beginning to symbolize a slow speed within the song and then it goes straight in to sharp greens, blues and reds to increase the speed of the song, to show that there is more areas on the screen to look at. These coloured beams of light are used to represent a party, but also shows them up on there own being lonely.

Beginning shot- There is a close up to Professor Greens face, with a non-diegetic sound of a woman singing in the background. It’s a tracking shot following him, but he turns away to show sadness in his emotion.
