• Introduced at 1998• Provided by one company at first then

another joined in shortly afterwards.• Limited service at the beginning covering

small areas.• The service included only phone calls.

INITIAL PHASE

• Limited service

• Poor Coverage concentrating on parts of major cities.

• Very expensive prices limiting the use of the service to few groups of the community.

• The service was just making calls.

• Older generation of mobile phones, bigger devices with few options and expensive prices.

Secondary Phase

• A second service provider was introduced.

• Coverage increased to include most cities.

• Competition had a positive effect on the quality of the service.

• Prices started to be more suitable for larger numbers and groups of the community through direct discounts on the prices of the calls and through coming up with new programs like prepaid cards.

• Companies started to introduce new services like sms messages.

• Newer generation of mobile phones, smaller in size and offering better options.

Evolution Phase

• Coverage now includes EGYPT.

• Numerous pricing options.

• Service affordable by the majority of the community.

• Not just phone calls, but much much more.

• Mobile communication developed rapidly since it was introduced in Egypt.

• The way it’s used (misused) in our community has to be debated and assessed.
