E-mail ‘Electronic mail’ was invented in 1982, it

was the process of sending electronic messages between systems

The invention of this word would suggest this was the start of the reliance on technology

IBM made the personal computer more mainstream as an oppose to a niche product

Hackers Because of the new technology being

used to store personal information it became possible for ‘hackers’ to access data

Before the only way to obtain someone’s personal information would be to physically break into a building with the information written down

The term ‘hacker’ was needed because it is a very specific type of identity fraud or theft

Nuclear winter There was a lot of concern that the

relationship between the US and Russia would further decline and increase the threat of nuclear warfare

A ‘nuclear winter’ is the by-product of an atomic explosion; it is when the light from the sun is blocked out

After the first and second world war and the advance in technology people realised it was in their interest to avoid war by any means

The term ‘peace camp’ also came about during this period

The invention of the ‘Pac-man’ arcade game by Namco started a whole new type of teenager, this was the start of the ‘gamer’

Gaming was a new way for teenagers to spend their spare time

The new music genre became popular and the terms: ‘death metal’ ‘heavy metal’ but also ‘glam rock’ and ‘heavy rock’

The new methods of listening to music such as the Sony Walkman meant people could listen to what they wanted
