TRAFFIC CONTROL SIGNALLING

The main aim of this study was to design and implement traffic control system using PLC(programmable logic controller).

Programmable logic controller(PLC)

Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) is an assembly of solid state digital electronic elements designed to make logical decisions and provide outputs.

Components of PLC

• A Central Processing Unit (CPU)

• Input / Output Section (I/O Section)

• Programming Device

Page 6: Traffic Control Signalling

Working of PLC

• Detects the state of all input devices that are connected to the plc.

• Executes the user created program logic.

• Energizes or de-energize all output devices that are connected to the plc.

Page 7: Traffic Control Signalling

Advantages of PLC

• Simple programming.

• Program changes without system intervention.

• Smaller, cheaper and more reliable than

corresponding relay control systems.

• Simple, low cost maintenance.

 Project Scope

• Construct a model of two way junction of a traffic light model.

• Program a ladder logic diagram to control the traffic light.

• Combine the software part and the hardware part to simulate a traffic light system.

Advantages

• Save the time of motorists’.• Reduced congestion.• Greater fuel economy.

Page 11: Traffic Control Signalling

APPLICATIONS • Increasing the traffic handling capacity.

• Reduce collisions.

• Reduces fuel consumption.

Page 12: Traffic Control Signalling

Future Scope

• Install load cells

• Flexibility in changing the timings of the traffic lights accordingly.

Conclusion

Implementing a traffic control signal using PLC has greatly reduced the complexity involved in controlling these lights.
