203-6.3.3 Superpave Mix Design

Method.

203-6.6 Hot Mix Asphalt (“Superpave”)

Mixtures [Local Agency Version].

Page 13: Southern California "Greenbook" public works specification book update

Superpave [Local Agency Version]

Approach:

Avoid “dry” mixes.

Determine, via independent testing, the

Superpave test parameters which result in

mixtures close to the current Hveem B and

C2 mixtures being produced.

Draft Subsections 203-3.3 and 203-6.6.

Superpave [Local Agency Version]

Hot drop (C2 mix) produced and samples split by Matich [thank you!].

Independent testing by 10 labs.

No. of gyrations which result in a mixture with 4% air voids to be determined by each lab.

No. of gyrations to be compared and a specific no. determined.

Additional testing on hot drops and samples from Blue Diamond and Vulcan [thank you!]

302-5 Asphalt Concrete Pavement.

“Raise the bar.”

Revise and update.

Address current best practices such as

automatic screed control, material transfer

vehicles, etc.

Special thanks to the Asphalt Concrete Task Force, Tom

Williams, LaBelle-Marvin, Chair; and the Surface Materials

and Methods Subcommittee, Chris Kubasek, Orange

County Public Works, Chair.

Participation on subcommittees and task forces is at an all

time low. For the “Greenbook” to continue as a

sustainable entity, new and broader participation from

public agencies, contractors, and consultants is needed.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
