The Project of

Smart Litter Bin

Proposal and Solutions to some basic problems with the SmartReturn Policy

A BASIC PROTOTYPE FOR INNOVATION CHALLENGE, INSTRUO-2016

Page 2: Smart bin proposals

First, we need to understand some of the basic limitations of the Prototype with, • Limited sensors and actuators used primarily in an explicit way

around the bin.• There is a certain the lack of specific detection provision in the

system that would restrict the detection of different garbage types.

In more developed Models however both of these limitations can be overcome, but can we still come out with most effective fulfillment of purposes* by making some ingenious modifications?

Page 3: Smart bin proposals

What kind of garbage it will operate most suitably to ?

Page 4: Smart bin proposals

Clean and Solid (mainly, polybags, paper cups & plates, stray wrappers)[so that the bin is not

littered]

Mostly Lightweight, for otherwise that can

hamper the explicitly set sensors (in the prototype)

Garbage with similar kind of sources, and therefore

effectively similar, so that even without specific

detection of garbage type, efficient and useful data points can be obtained.

Also with specific kind of similar Garbage type, post-disposal management would be easy.

Page 5: Smart bin proposals

What kind of People it is addressed to ?

Page 6: Smart bin proposals

Having Smart-phones with Wi-Fi facility, know to operate that

In accordance to the preferred garbage types, coffee shops, parks, college canteen or food-courts would be our primary target zone.

Generally privileged and educated.

Less prone to nuisance or violence of civic rules in public, lesser under surveillance

Page 7: Smart bin proposals

Another cause of implementing this system primarily to the more Sophisticated, Privileged and often Corporate places is that the whole process of using the Smart Bin and having some monetary Returns is a little bit delayed process, itself sophisticated. So we cannot expect, so far, a large rush of garbage disposal.

(and that too with the smaller bin we have here )

Page 8: Smart bin proposals

Now having these knowledge, let’s consider some technical problems with the SmartReturn Policy, that people will be offered on proper garbage disposal.

Page 9: Smart bin proposals

The Proposed SmartReturn Policy

Garbage Disposed Garbage Detected

Password generated Wi-Fi Connected

(for a span of 30 mins) (SmartReturn)

Page 10: Smart bin proposals

So far, so good. But…

Proposed Plan(s) to avoid disclosure of the Password in pubic (once and for all) :

• The password would be changed repeatedly after each 30 minutes. • The passwords would be generated in Random, so that there is no discrepancy.

But even then, there are some intimate problems arising from this model.

Page 11: Smart bin proposals

• Say, if I am connected to the Wi-Fi on 5:50 pm, and the password would be changed on 6:00 pm, I will get disconnected after only 10 minutes, deprived of 20 minutes of promised internet connectivity.

• Say, if the provision is little modified, viz. the password will be different for different phones, and each of them will be varied after 30 minutes. But is there any technique that a Wi-Fi router will detect each mobile phone separately (without any mark, for putting phone numbers on a Bin will literally dispose the privacy, too!) ?

• Again, there is a fallacy in the Practicality of the Model. Say, I am enjoying a good evening with my friends at Mc.D. Now, only after the feast, the litter will be produced, supposed to be disposed in the Bin. Now why the hell would I like to stay here for another 30 minutes to enjoy internet! (not to be encouraged by the shopkeeper too!)

Got the point ? All the garbage is produced only after enjoying the full product.

So, there is a subtle fallacy of Time-relevance along with Technical Complication.

Page 12: Smart bin proposals

So, I’m proposing this, instead of providing free Wi-Fi ; that model is otherwise great and in line with today’s concept of Smart-Cities, but let’s consider a more General and Lucrative incentive (for the free Wi-Fi cannot be accessible from my mum’s Nokia-1600)

Hope, you’ll consider it !!

Page 13: Smart bin proposals

First, the same as before…

Garbage Disposed Garbage Detected Password Generated

Page 14: Smart bin proposals

But here’s the tweak…

What if the password does not merely provide some free Wi-Fi, But it acts as the Bonus Code, using which in the Exclusive App for such Smart-Bin, one can find free balance.

More Rejoice !!!!

Free Money of any value makes an Ordinary People happy like nothing !!! Won’t you agree with it ?

gotcha the code!!!

Page 15: Smart bin proposals

Two Doubts needs to be clarified here :

• Who will provide the money, in our model ?

Is that really matter for this prototype? Who’d provide the free Wi-Fi either way? The Government provides free Wi-Fi with some not-so-unscrupulous collaborate with Private Sector. Here too, there is a whole lot of companies like freecharge or Paytm out there to provide you online free balance, that you can use in recharging and what not !!!

In the model, we need to develop an app, that can recognize the password; and gives a confirmation. Brother, that’s the funniest part of developing a Prototype.

The Wi-Fi part is gone, sorry, but a whole new app (not so much complicated, though) incorporated with the project. Isn’t that great ??!!

• What if my password is overlooked by someone else? That problem too exist with the Wi-Fi model. But at least there is quite less possibility of public disclosure

as with the 30-mins-password model. May be in more developed models, with some more authentication, we can eradicate such chances of breeches.

Page 16: Smart bin proposals

Some Benefits of this Model:

• With the incorporation of the App for applying the password, genuine data collection would be more swift and less noisy.

• The process would be rather way more smart, opening more possibilities of such online-payment sector.

• If one does not have the smart-phone either, he can message the code in some format in the ‘old’ way, and later claim the money via Desktop site of the App. (no, no, I am saying of building an website; it’s but one prospect to make the scheme More General)

Page 17: Smart bin proposals

So in summary, my proposal is :

Replacing the free Wi-Fi model with Online Balance Model, the monetary incentive.

Development of an App that cana. Recognize the Password.

b. Confirm the balance, to be claimed later.(here only confirmation)

Data collection form the app itself. Include a provision of an optional survey, that would enrich our Data.

That’s all from my side. Feel free to reject it if you wish !!!!
