SHANGHAI TOWER

INTRODUCTION

Page 3: SHANGHAI TOWER - Shanghai, China

The tower is designed in the form of 9 cylindrical buildings which are stacked one over

the other.

The outer layer twists through 120 degree as it rises.

The building has twin layers of

transparent facade.

ARCHITECTURAL SALIENT FEATURES

STRUCTURAL SYSTEM

The building has been divided into 9 separate zones along its height which are separated by 8

strengthening floors in between.

Thornton Tomasetti, structural engineer, has designed a simple, safe and cost-effective structural system

that permitted the creation of an innovative architectural form.

Core Wall Inner Tube System

The central core wall of the tower is not uniform throughout of its height instead it changes as one rises.

At the bottom of the building, the core wall inner tube consists of 9 cells which forms a 30 m×30 m

square. This shape goes up to zone 4 level.

Core wall between zone 4 and 5 and 6&7 is as below.

It even reduces to rectangle of 3 cells for the upper most part of the tube.

The super columns are composite structure with concrete-encased steel

vertical sections.

There are four paired super columns – two at each end of each ortho

normal axis

Encased steel sections in the super column are the key element to ensure

the proper performance of the connections and thus the performance of the

structure.

From the performance-based design analysis, Embedded steel elements in

super columns and core walls were found to be elastic

Composite Super Columns

Floor System

The floors are designed as a composite deck which have profiled steel sheets as the

permanent bottom formwork for the reinforced concrete slabs.

Foundation System Super-long bored piles have length larger than 50m and slenderness ratio more than 50

were used.

831 reinforced concrete bore piles

more than 61,000 cubic metres of concrete
