PROCEDURE
• These advanced inspection techniques can be expensive due to the need of having professionally trained technicians to perform the testing and to acquire and analyze the inspection results. Examples of NDT techniques that can be used for rebar location are ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and magnetic devices such as cover meters
HISTORICAL
• The researchers performed a literature review of the primary techniques for use to detect steel rebar embedded in concrete structures. Three methods were identified: nuclear, magnetic and ground penetrating radar method. For each method, principles and advantages and disadvantages were is cussed.
• After performing a detailed literature review and understanding both advantages and limitations of each rebar locator method, the researchers decided to focus on detecting cover meters devices available on the market.
• Non Destructive Testing (NDT) methods are popular for routine inspection of bridge members. With the ability of new highly technical systems, some of these NDT techniques can be used for reinforcing steel rebar location in concrete bridge decks without destruction of the members being tested. Use of these techniques has the ability to minimize traffic restrictions related to field data collection and to improve design and asset management..
Non Destructive Test
Rebar Detector
• Rebar detector is one of the NDT, which are used to locate the steel bar embedded in concrete before drilling and before taking core test.
• It is the easiest and fastest ways for detecting reinforcing bar in concrete. It is widely used before coring or drilling holes to find “safe spots” .
• It will indicate rebar location, direction and also will give an indication of the depth of concrete cover.
More information
• The rebar detection instrument (Profoscope) has a unique real-time visualization mechanism, allowing the contractor to actually see the location of rebar's beneath the concrete surface. The (Profoscope+) features data storage for automatic collection of data to make rebar detection more efficient. The (Profometer 5+) combines rebar detection and measurement of concrete cover and bar diameters in one instrument.
Profoscope
The fully integrated Profoscope for quick and easy rebar detection.
Profoscope +
The Profoscope+ has the same features as the Profoscope, but additionally offers the innovative memory function for data acquisition.
Profometer 5+
The Profometer 5+ is an advanced device for the non destructive detection of rebars and for the measurement of concrete cover and bar diameters.
Profometer PM-600 / 630
The Profometer PM-600 / 630 are advanced cover meters which come with the new generation Profometer Touch screen unit.
SIGNIFICANCE
• Hitting a rebar however boring into the reinforced concrete moreover taking core may be destroy the drilling instrument and can severely weaken the concrete structure.
• An instrument for rebar detection that quickly and accurately determines the location of the reinforcing bars in the concrete.
MECHANISM
• A rebar detector works on the principle that the steel within the concrete will be affected by a magnetic field that is applied by the detector.
• By assuming a set magnetic property for all steel reinforcing bars and using a given bar size, the detector can predict the depth and location of the reinforcing bars.
• The signal received will increase with increasing bar size and decrease with increasing cover.
• To locate the bar position, the distance to the bar is minimized, indicating that the rebar detector is directly over a piece of the reinforcing steel.
APPARATUS
• Rebar detector (Micro Cover Meter)
• Ruler
• Marker
PROCEDURE
• The instrument is laid at the surface of the column or slab.
• An Instrument is moving from the left to right and then from the bottom to up to get the position of the reinforcement.
• Once the location of rebar are found, a masonry drill is used to locate the total cover to the rebar.
