INTRODUCTION The electricity sector in India had an

installed capacity of 237.742 GW as of February 2014,  the world's fourth largest.

India's network losses exceeded 35% including non-technical losses out of which  technical losses is estimated to be 22.65% in 2013. compared to world average of less than 15%.

One of the important mischief is the power theft which is contributing a larger amount to the nontechnical losses in transmission and distribution.

Aim of the paper is to reduce power theft and improve the power quality by the the help of Fuzzy logic .

POWER THEFT Power theft could be defined as using the

electricity without paying for it basically it is stealing of electricity.

Two kinds of theft are prevalent in power systems.1) The Meter tampering2) The direct rigging of the distribution line

6

THE METER TAMPERING Meter tampering is the method of tampering

the meter by removing it’s seal . By-passing the meter so that a lower reading

of power use. Standard electro-mechanical meters use a

slowly spinning disk to record the amount of power that is being drawn , the disks can be slowed using magnets .

PREVENTION:-

the prevention of power theft of this type can be detected by placing a LDR circuit inside the meter .

8

THE DIRECT RIGGING OF THE DISTRIBUTION LINE

The most visible indication of energy theft occurs when users illegally tap into the public supply.

we cannot identify the power theft automatically.

POWER QUALITY

The quality of electrical power may be described as a set of values of parameters such as continuity of service, variation in voltage magnitude, transient voltages and currents harmonic content in the waveforms.

power quality is a convenient term for many, it is the quality of voltage which is supplied to the consumers rather than current or power.

FUZZY LOGIC

Fuzzy logic can be conceptualized as a generalization of classical logic.

There are not just two alternatives but a whole continuum of truth values for logical propositions.

EXAMPLES OF MATLAB RESULTS

Result of Over-Voltage : If the voltage is 151V then the change voltage is -151V

Page 15: prevention of power theft and power uality by the help of fuzzy logic

15

Result of Normal functioning: If the voltage is 230V then the change voltage is 0V.

Page 16: prevention of power theft and power uality by the help of fuzzy logic

16

RESULT OF POWER THEFT: VOLTAGE IS BROUGHT DOWN BELOWTHE CRITICAL VALUE IN CASE OF POWER THEFT.

17

CONCLUSION Thus , the application of intelligent control in

electrical system can improve the power quality and at the same time prevent illegal activities . The power theft prevention would be a boom to a country’s economy in managing the need for power generation.
