• MESHING IS DIVIDING THE PART ON WHICH ANALYSIS IS TO BE DONE INTO SMALL FINITE NUMBER OF ELEMENTS.

• FEA USES THOSE FINITE POINTS TO CARRY OUT CALCULATIONS AND THEN INTERPOLATE HE RESULTS FOR THE ENTIRE SURFACE OR VOLUME.

• THE SMALLER THE ELEMENTS, THE ACCURATE THE RESULT.• BUT SMALLER ELEMENTS WILL ALSO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF ELEMENTS IN

THE COMPONENT AND HENCE THE ANALYSIS TIME REQUIRED FOR THE COMPUTER FOR CALCULATION ALSO INCREASES.

• THEREFORE, (ELEMENT SIZE) (COMPUTATION TIME) ().

STEPS TO PERFORM BASIC MESHING – 2D & 3D

• CREATE A CUBE (WITH SURFACES AS SHOWN).• GO TO 2D>AUTOMESH.• SELECT THE SURFACE OF THE CUBE TO BE

MESHED.• ELEMENT SIZE DESCRIBES THE SIZE OF EACH

ELEMENT, WHICH 10 X 10 HERE. (FOR QUAD ELEMENTS.)

• CLICK ON MESH.• CUBE SURFACE WILL GET MESHED AS SHOWN.

STEPS FOR 3D MESHING

• IN THE LAST SLIDE, WE HAD PERFORMED 2D MESHING OF A SURFACE.• FOR MESHING IT WITH 3D ELEMENTS, GO TO 3D>SOLIDMAP.• SELECT SOURCE GEOMETRY (AS A SURFACE), THAT IS THE SURFACE

WHICH IS JUST MESHED.• CLICK ON DESTINATION GEOMETRY (AS LINES) AND SELECT LINES

OPPOSITE TO THE SOURCE SURFACE AS SHOWN IN FIRST PICTURE.• CLICK ON ALONG GEOMETRY (AS LINES) AND SELECT LINES BETWEEN

SOURCE AND DESTINATION.• REMEMBER TO KEEP THE ELEMENT SIZE SAME AS IN 2D-AUTOMESH

AND LINEAR INTENSITY 0. CLICK ON MESH.

3D MESHED CUBE

• A 3D MESHED CUBE WILL BE CREATED AS SHOWN.

DELETE THE OVERLAPPING ELEMENTS

• NOW, THE FACE ON WHICH WE PERFORMED A 2D AUTOMESH WILL STILL HAVE 2D SURFACE ELEMENTS WHICH WILL APPEAR IN A DIFFERENT COLOUR.

• THOSE ARE EXTRA ELEMENTS WHICH WE NEED TO DELETE.

• GO TO DELETE BUTTON (RED CROSS AS SHOWN BELOW) AND FOLLOWING WILL APPEAR.

• SELECT ANY ONE ELEMENT ON THAT FACE, AGAIN CLICK ON “ELEMS” BUTTON SHOWN BELOW AND CLICK ON “BY FACE”. (SHOWN IN NEXT SLIDE)

DELETE THE OVERLAPPING ELEMENTS

• AFTER CLICKING ON “BY FACE” THE ELEMENTS ON THE FACE WILL GET SELECTED.

• NOW CLICK ON DELETE ENTITY BUTTON.• ELEMENTS ON THE FACE WILL NOW BE DELETED.• NOW, A 3D MESHED CUBE IS READY.
