What is planning?

● thinking about all of the stages you need to go through in order to achieve a specific aim

● identifying all of the main issues and requirements before starting work

● reviewing all of the different processes and procedures that need to be applied

● identifying any problems or difficulties that might be encountered.

Why bother to plan?

● get the job done quickly, safely and without error● avoid problems and complications● reduce waste and down time● ensure safety and minimise hazards.

Planning and preparation

Planning usually involves checking that you have: ● enough time and skill and the correct authorisation to carry out

the activity● the necessary documents, drawings and other information

needed to do the job● the right tools, materials, parts and equipment● a suitable work area● the correct personal protective equipment (PPE).

Planning can often help to save money. Can you think of an example of this?

Think of an engineering activity that you have carried out recently. Make a list of the individual tasks that have contributed to this activity and list them in the order in which they were carried out.
