SPACE SOLAR POWER

• CONCEPT OF COLLECTING SOLAR POWER IN SPACE

• COLLECTED ENERGY CONVERTED INTO RADIATION

• TRANSMITTED TO EARTH STATION• CONVERTED TO AC FOR TERRESTIAL USE

BASIC COMPONENTS

A huge solar collector typically made of solar cells

DC to microwave conversion through magnetron

Microwave transmitting antenna, aimed at earth where rectennas are placed

SPACETENNA : (Antenna on Satellite)

Transmitting antenna on horizontal surface, that faces the earth and carry solar array

Produce microwave(2.45GHz) and transmitted to atmosphere

It has a square shape with dimension 132m by 132m

About 2.6 million antenna on spacetenna

RECTENNA(Rectifying Antenna)

• Receives microwave of frequency 2.45GHz from transmitter

• With 85% efficiency• Diameter is about 5 KM• 95% of the beam will fall on the rectenna

SATELLITE POWER SYSTEM

ADVANTAGE: Unlimited energy source Unlike coal and nuclear fuels SPS

does not require mining operation Energy delivery anywhere in the

world Zero fuel cost Zero emission of CO2 and other

hazardous waste Efficient collection of solar

radiation Will not prone to the threat of

terrorist like nuclear power plant

DISADVANTAGE: Storage of electricity during off

peak demand hour Frequency of beamed radiation is

planned to be at 2.45GHz and this frequency is used by communication satellite also

Massive structure High initial cost and much time for

construction Requires a network of hundred of

satellite Size of spacetenna and rectenna
